Tip for air compressor isolation mounts
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:21:49 pm »
Not sure if this really qualifies as a DIY, but figured I'd share the rubber and wood isolation mounts I mad for my air compressor.

I started by cutting and drilling 2 treated 4x4s, then used a hammer drill and concrete anchors to mount those to the garage floor.  The wood provides a little of its own isolation to the floor, but I wanted some rubber dampers on the top of the feet to give some rebound isolation.  I recently replaced the shocks on the big Dodge, and I saved the rubber isolators and washers from the front shocks, 4 isolators and 4 feet on the air compressor...Bingo.  I just ran the lag screws down until the rubber bulged just a little.  Didn't make much difference in the noise of my compressor, but made me feel a little better that it won't be as likely to vibrate the 4x4s to death.

Here's links to a few pics for illustration(figured the links would save load time for those not interested):

one thing that might help more is if you put rubber boots under the metal feet too,
my compressors in the truck actually have feet very similar to those and the rubber boots are under the feet,

the big compressor at work is bolted right to the floor, lemme tell ya that is obnoxious

it aint low till it scars asphalt

Yeah, I would have liked to sandwich the feet between isolators, but all I had was 4.  Maybe I'll run across some more one of these days.

Are your 4x4s bolted down or not? If not that could be a good source of noise too

Oh yes, the 4x's are anchored to the floor.  Honestly there isn't going to be too much quieting my compressor anyway, it's a 60gal vertical with a 2-cylinder oilless 6HP compressor on top.  It's just destined to be loud, but like I say, the rubber isolators make me feel a little better about how it's held in place.
