Title: Smarty Jr Torque Settings
Post by: NickBeek on July 09, 2009, 01:06:50 am
Ok someone help me decipher this ItalEnglish from the owners manual.

Torque
The Torque selection can be programmed 1 - Stock, 2 - Mild, 3 - Soft (less than #2) or 4 - Light (less
than #3).
With the Default torque setting, Smarty chooses it according to the current CaTCHER level.

I guess stock = original truck setting.

Does mild = more or less torque or more or less torque management?

I want to reduce some of the smoke for daily driving while keeping the supposed mileage increase, that I can't detect in default setting. My assumption is that if I have less smoke while getting moving I should get better mileage.

Hmmm, must be something new? My jr. only has 3 settings;

Stock  which is original factory settings
1. economy
2. tow
3. performance

1 was okay, 2 makes a ton of smoke and 3 is best with a little less smoke than 2. I have to be a little aggressive on the throttle to get much smoke out of setting 3. Setting 2 makes me look like Rich's truck.   I'm guessing yours has the POD kinda thing with it?

the higher the number the lowered torque management. just with the smarty Sr, 0=stock, 4=no torque management.

truthfully, all the lowered TM does is make the throttle more "touchy" so less throttle position is needed.

See the way it's worded above (copied and pasted from the manual) it looks like the setting adjusts torque, not torque management. Is it worded the same in the senior book?

If it is the way you say Drew, then the lowest smoke should be on Torque setting "Stock". But the way I read it the lowest smoke should be on setting 4 "less than 3" ? I'm confused fo sho. ;D

Ken, I have the POD and the Revo software. The Revo allows for setting torque and timing.

4 is basically no Tq. Man. I ran that thing on 4 with it on 100hp (#3) after I got my tranny mods and pulled the best mpg there (23.3 hand calc was normal if I could run 65mph  or under :punk: ... With your clutch you might wait on that unless you got some good throttle control  :devil2:

Timing #2 Tq. #4 HP #3, If you got a bad clutch or a heavy foot I'd run #2-#3 on Tq....

I'd see who has it with a manual on here though as I have an auto.... And don't push it while your towing or you may as well mod the tranny now   :suicide:

smarty #8 and my TST on 4/1 pushed 475 853 at the rear wheels. . .clutch never slipped, ( I just ran out of fuel)

anyway smarty by itself loaded to the max wont slip the clutch while unloaded, now put 10K behind it with smarty pushing max and yea, it'll slip. however 100hp on the Jr with stock TM may not slip the clutch.

BTW, the TST by itself will slip my clutch on 5/3. that box is pure evil.

Nick,

Just for reference....

I see my best mileage (around town) when I have everything set so that I get a little bit of smoke at takeoff from a light.

It gives it just enough extra fuel to get the turbos spinning from a stop.

When there is no smoke at all from a stop, I end up using more pedal to accelerate.

Definitely gotta play with it and see what works for ya.

Speaking of trying different settings and such, if there a theoretical limit to how many times you can flash the ECM before it won't take anymore? With all the combinations trying to find the sweet spot I think I flashed mine 8 or 10 times the first day I had the smarty.

Marco and Bob answered that question a while back when smarty first came out since people were playing around just like you are with the different settings.

They concluded the average ECM can handle around 10,000 flashes before the EEPROM starts having sectors go bad.

Guys with the earlier clutch before the dreaded DMF don't have as much slipping issues as those with the DMF (me) do. It really isn't the clutch slipping from all accounts it is the DMF giving up. I believe this is true because when it slips I can hear the springs in that POS hitting the end of their travel. It is NOT a very friendly sound.

Oh well, the tax return will be in my account any day now. When it hits a new Valair organic / ferramic clutch will be on order (good for 500hp). Then I guess I'll find the next weak link.

Gimme a call when you get the goodies brother and we'll get ya up on the lift and get that new clutch in.

I'm sure Drew is gonna wanna be there for that one.
