Auxiliary bed fuel/tool tank
« on: October 31, 2011, 06:22:14 pm »
Anyone using a auxiliary bed fuel tank? Hopefully picking up a used one from my Dad (F-350). Gravity fed type that plumbs into the filler neck.

I believe Big River has one. I used to have a 100 gallon tank in my '99 F-350 and loved it (except when it was fill up time  :$: ). Mine was plumbed right into the fuel line with a switching solenoid. Flick the switch and it went from the stock tank to the aux. tank, plus the fuel gauge switch also. Three reasons why I didn't switch it to the Dodge.....

1. Not baffled. With about 65 gallons or so in the tank, a hard corner would make the truck feel like it was going over.

2. The Ford didn't use a in tank pump, the Dodge does. I would have had to revamp/add a fuel pump/wiring to the aux. tank to make it work. (Didn't know about Fass and such back then).

3. The deal went so fast I didn't really have time to uninstall it.

I still want a aux. tank, but this time I'm thinking about going with the transfer flow brand. One of the top in the industry, and I have a local authorized installer.

P.S....

4. Wife didn't like the fact that I could go 1100 miles before a pee break.....  :43:

The one my Dad has was originally set up with the solenoid etc. Had a switch on the dash and he could switch from one tank to another. The fuel gauge was wired also to show the contents of each tank. The electronics went out in the aux tank and he just sit it up to feed directly into the filler neck on the truck. Which is how I was planning on using it.

Yes, I have a Transferflow system. It's a 50 gal. tank setup with a in cab controller (Trax II ) that keeps percentages of both tanks near equal.

http://transferflow.com/crossthebedtanks_0.html

Nice set up except for when it's time to fill er' up.

Not that I've done this, but I chose this model for if in the future I wanted a tunneau cover, it would fit without interference with the tank.

That would have been nice this past week.  We stopped 3 times to fill up each way to the Keys and back.

Yep...know what you mean. Going to Panama city, FL for Thanksgiving week. Would be nice to drive there and back (700-800 miles) with out having to stop for fuel.

Pics are going to take awhile to sort out.
I'll probably post some in my other thread and start one in NHB for others.

Last time we towed the camper to Disney (North of New Orleans to Orlando), made it there and drove around for almost a week before having to tank up again.

I'm thinking the next tank will be 50 gallons also. Just need something to get me the whole day without filling up, then top it off after we stop for the night, or first thing when we hit the road in the morning.

With the 100 gallon tank, we went on a trip to Williamsburg Virginia.....got almost 1100 miles before the first fuel up.  :43:   :$:

Just an FYI, I was in discussion with Titan Fuel Tanks about seeing if they were going to make one to fit our trucks.  They have said no, sadly.  However, if you own a 2010 or newer, they will have one out in a couple months that will fit.

A few months later....

Found out the tank my Dad has will not fit. A camping friend of mine just picked up a used Silverado HD 2500 diesel. It had a RDS aux tank in it which he does not want. Going to go by an check it out and bring it home if it fits etc.

I've got a 90 gallon tank that I purchased through Northern Tool. It's RDS, DOT approved as a transfer tank and as pretty inexpensive. The 90 gallons plus my 34 gallon OE tank was good for well over 1,000 miles without filling up. It is a tall rectangle tank, so it fit my short bed no problem, even with my GN hitch.

As for the gravity fed method, I do not recommend it. That's the method I used, and it doesn't work. I had purchased an electric fuel solenoid valve and had it plumbed in to dump into the filler neck. I found out the hard way that the weight of the fuel leaks past the valve, overfilling the main tank. I never had a fuel spill, but it is dangerous non the less. What I have planned is running a fuel line up to the top of the tank, and using an electric fuel pump to draw fuel up and into the tank. No chance for a leak.

Picked it up this evening. Fits real good...

Now....on installing it....They guy who sold the truck to the friend of mine who I bought the tank off happen to be at my friends house. ....good so far...

He explained on how he had it installed. The aux tank was connected directly to the main fuel tank vent. Fuel would then drain from the aux to the main tank. They used this round puck looking device to block off the filler neck to the main tank. This would keep fuel from leaking out the filler neck. You then always use the fuel intake on the aux tank to take on fuel.

Just ordered the install kit from RDS (maker of the tank). Do not think I want to install it as the previous owner did.

Did/do you guys always keep fuel in the aux tank? Always keep it on...let it constantly feed into your OEM and refuel via the aux tank?
