Title: Winter Toyota Project
Post by: Taurus on October 24, 2011, 04:05:21 am
After the dodge got stuck in a little bit of snow last winter,

I decided that a nice light weight snow wheeling truck would be a good investment.  Been putting a lot of work to get ready for this winter and have loosely documented it.

1990 toyota extended cab pickup is the platform I started with

not much to look at, but its a solid frame, trans, and motor.

A wee bit of damage on the passenger side

Some damage on the bed corner too

Step 1:
That IFS has got to go

it took some of the motor mount with it

Step 2:
SAS spring mounts replace the IFS garbage

Step 3:
Rear spring mounts move forward 5 inches

Step 4:
1984 toyota front axle slides in with allpro 4" springs

yep, its got a high pinion diff with 4.88 gears and an ARB locker installed

Step 5:

Front end buttoned up with chromoly hub gears, 30 spline longfield axles and bilstein shocks

Step 6:

rear gets the same treatment with 4.88 gears and an ARB locker

Step 7:

Body damage gets repaired

Bed gets Bobbed 9" and Herculined in white

The cab gets the same Herculiner treatment

Step 8:

Locker switches get wired in

Middle location will be used for the air compressor

Step 9:

Some new bumpers go on

Next on the list is to convert the AC to an air compressor, get some drive lines fabbed, fill the bumper with a winch, and roll some 37" Iroks under it. :punk:  :43:

Bring it on Winter.  :gunsmilie:

nice looking rig, been building a fiberglass cj5 myself, wish I made progress like you have.
Might change that spring shackle config, looks like a weak link.
Never run any of the Super Swamper brand tires let me know how you like em for that kind of wheeelin

Shackle angle should improve after 2-3 runs.  The springs havent seen a single flexing yet.  From what I've seen, Iroks are the only tire to run in the snow.  Everyone Iknow recommends them.

It might get a small ford diesel in the future, but a chevy 4.3 swaps in pretty easily.

Cool project, looks fun as hell  :punk:  As for the Irok's, years ago I had a '84 CJ-7 with 36" Super Swampers (this was back when they only made one style tire). Excellent tire, absolutely sucked in the heavy snow and ice. The main problem was the jeep was so light, it would ride up on top of the snow, then when it broke thru it was high centered with the wheels dangling in the breeze.  :banging: Used the winch A LOT.  I think the tires would have worked better if they weren't so wide. Tall and skinny for the snow is the way to go.

I swear I just heard that... AND- It is apparently also going to be dark, cold, and rainy. Such a happy sounding place. Good thing I have a closet full of down jackets, vests, and boots!

So- hurry up and get this truck done so we can play in the snow! The MINI isn't going to get us very far...

After thinking about it, I stand corrected. It wasn't the Swampers I had problems with, but Mickey Thompson Baja Belted at 33"x12.5"x15".  Excellent trail tire, loose dirt/sand, good pavement wear, moderate in the mud. Really sucked on ice and snow. The Swampers (called TSL radial now I think), sized 36"x12.5"x15" were excellent off-road tires, excellent in the mud, not bad on the street. I got rid of the Jeep before I had a chance to run these in the snow. Man I miss my heep...  :pout:

Sweet lookin rig you've built yourself, I'm lookin to do some more work to my jeep. After Friday I'm ordering a new lift for it. Also keepin my options open for finding a new motor for it. The old 258 is all worn out in it.

...... As for the Irok's, years ago I had a '84 CJ-7 with 36" Super Swampers (this was back when they only made one style tire). Excellent tire, absolutely sucked in the heavy snow and ice.....

Not to go off topic here, but earlier this year you suggested that it was the rear axle shafts spinning out in the hubs that caused my 81 CJ-8 to stop going, well just wanted to say that last weekend my brother and I finally finished up the new axles and brakes on the rear, and now it's back on the road drivin around. Thanks for the heads up on that.

I was measuring drivelines and forgot to check.  It looks like it clears, but with only about an inch to spare.  Should be plenty of room if i drop the tires to 10psi.

Currently there's no radio or CB installed, so you'd have no way to tune me out.  The only escape will be bailing out of a moving vehicle.

Cool! that is a very common problem with the AMC corporate axle. As for the motor, the 258 is a nice stump pulling inline 6 for a CJ, maybe rebuild it with a little more spunk to it. Clifford Performance used to be thee place for performance Jeep go fast parts.

Another option would be a small block chevy transplant. Easy to do, you can get complete install kits with mounts, adapters, etc. to make it virtually a bolt in job. I had a 327 chevy in my '84 CJ and it was the perfect motor. Stock rebuild, worked very well, with highway mileage in the 20's. :punk:

Post by: 96GreenMachine on November 22, 2011, 05:52:14 am
I'm contemplating finding a 4.0 from a 91-95 jeep. A pretty common thing is to take the crank from the 4.2 and put it in the 4.0 to make a 4.5 stroker or bore it .060 to make what's called the "torque monster" 4.7 stroker.

Or, put the 4.0 head and top end onto the lower end of the 4.2 which is a complete bolt on procedure, giving you a 10:1 compression ratio. And basically it becomes a fuel injected 4.2.

My uncle has a late 70's cj5 I believe with a 327, and that's a mean little motor in it. There's plenty of options out there, I just need to choose one and go with it. And find myself a new frame being that the jeep has at least 6 cracked spots that have been welded already but continue to break.

Most of the snow has melted off the past few weeks.  Theres pretty much only hard packed ice left, but next weekend it'll drive out of the garage and if everything shows up, it will be streetable.  It was tempting to try and take it out today, but I had some work I needed to get done for an early morning meeting.  I'm hoping for some fresh snow over christmas break to go on its first run.

YAY!!! Glad you guys finally got it out of the garage! Looks like you boys had fun tearing up your parents' place. I'll have to test out your passenger seat and make sure it works... ;)

See ya tomorrow!

She come out looking great! That's why you build them, so you can tear 'em up.   :43:  I had a CJ that spent a little time as a FWD jeep....  :fart:

The new hubs came in today.  Swap the chromo gears into them and weld on some removable mud flap brackets is my goal.  After that it gets trailer hauled to the shop for an alignment and a final nut and bolt check.

Now, if only we could get some fresh snow to test it out.  Its been way too warm these past few days, but I'm sure winter will start as soon as I have to leave on business travel  :banging:.
