Title: A/C compressor question

Hey everyone, I went out to my truck last week, and found a leak coming from under the hood. Opened up the hood and found my a/c compressor soaked in oil and a steady drip coming from it. At $200 for a new compressor I was originally gonna just put a bypass pulley on. But now I've noticed my heater not working, and realized that when i turned on my heater, I can hear the A/C pump come on. My question is does the compressor have anything to do with my heater system, or is it another problem I have to solve? No leaks from the heater core, and everything else checks out fine. Trucks a 96 Ram with the 5.2. Any help is appreciated.

I now the ac compressor comes on with the defrost

 I think the compresssor is cycled periodically to keep the system lubricated.

You can disconnect the wire going to the clutch and that will keep it from engaging. Rob, on the older vehicles I don't think they did that, is was on a demand only basis. These newer vehicles I'm not fully sure except for the systems where it is designed to maintain a certain operator selected temp (my T&C being one).

Now, could you tell where the leak was coming from?

Well I jumped to conclusions to quickly and sounded like a fool  :banging: haha, the ac compressor was soaked in a green fluid which I had assumed was compressor oil, upon further inspection, I found my water pump gasket had let loose and coolant was slung all under the hood. So I slapped a new water pump on and new hoses and all has been good.

Much cheaper and easier fix at least!
