Title: meet ICE BOX ;-)
Post by: NickC on January 05, 2009, 05:22:04 am
well i figured ide keep it to the section.... heres the ICE BOX, this is what we deliver in all across US and cananda!

the reason for the name is every morning we wake up we feel like popsicle and the only thing that we get a laugh out of after she warms up is the name we made up for her. i will have to take more pictures of the inside... we have the inside pretty "tweaked" out... ive added a few speakers, a center counsel, and we also insulated the whole back and put carpet up around all the walls and ceiling which did absolutely nothing...

i just looked those up... might not be a bag idea! for the most part when we sleep in there its not much different then the ambient temperature, i dont think the sleeping bag i have is rated for cold weather like that. if my buddy heater turns out to be a bad idea i think im gonna go the mummy route

Them buddy heaters are the ticket. Real popular right now with the ice fishermen for heat in the shantys. There cool and use the 1lb tanks. You can refill the 1lb'er from a 20 or 30lb tank for real cheap. They have the fitting for sale on Harbor Freight.

i bought the BIG buddy heat on sale at dunhams for $110! what i steal i know, but i never ended up using it. i brought it out with me one time on the road and i was so nervous to use it while i was sleeping i just decided to go without it so i returned it. although i do wish i kept it for ice fishing, the heater i have is kinda cheap and this year i really have to tamper with it to get it to stay lit.

Congrats Nick !!

What's next on your list of adventures? So far you've done sewer cleaning, plowing, cement work, and now deliverys.

What's next?

haha, good memory, you dont miss a beat donny!

i have even done other things over the past hand full of winters... my older brother and i remodeled a foreclosure home one winter, the next winter we remodeled a few bathrooms, i build a salon for my ex girlfriend in her basement, hell, ive even pushed carts for sams club one winter and scored employee of the month   :punk:

as far as i know for next winter... well i was hoping to get an invite to the Florida keys  but i dont think that will ever happen. haha! but seriously, i think im going to stick with unemployment and plowing, its done the best for me so far! this is all unless some other crazy idea comes up throughout the summer. i do know that either this coming winter or the next i will have to get my Michigan builders license so i can go into business for myself. i have a feeling its going to take me more than a winter to pass, my dad and my older brother both took the test over 5 times each until they just barely squeaked by.

having time off every winter (in my eyes) is fun, it gives me a chance to break things up and try new things. also, it gives me all the "guilt free" time i can use up here on the DOF!!

I'd love to have winters off. Perhaps I should get into cement work as well? You should see the fake rock that I just built out of grout for my turtle tank. It looks pretty cool. I just finished it, and now I'm going to put it in a trash can full of water for the next two weeks to help it cure.

Do I hafta keep changing the water in the trashcan?

haha! mayfair gone concrete! your going to have to post pictures of the rock in your tank... im sure its really neat!

im no expert on grout but im sure its got many of the same traits as concrete. you are right on the curing, and that will defiantly make it stronger but most of the time people do that for concrete so its stronger to drive on... HOW BIGS YOUR TURTLE?!?! haha

and no, the water does not have to be changed. im not sure of the chemical reaction on the water, but i do know that when its curing, the cement does not throw a chemical in the water that will make it no do what its suppose to. (if that makes sense)

also, when did you get this turtle? is this the replacement of your blue ringed octopus when it dies a while back?

I've had the turtles since 1987. Right now they're in a 55 gallon tank. I just got them a 120. I'm taking my time putting it together. It's going to be pretty cool when it's all done that's for sure. Lemme get you some pics ... hang on

DAMN THOSE ARE SOME OLD TURTLES!

my brother use to catch turtles in a river near my house, we once had around 25 painted turtles in my back yard living in a knee deep swimming pool. turtles are pretty neat! what kind of turtles do you have? what do you feed them? im sure the 120 is going to be a SWEET upgrade for them! thats such a big tank, im sure we can fit Jo in there... frogG's and turtles get along right? haha

haha spencea15! i was born in 1986, its close for me also!

I have red eared sliders, and I've head them since they were born. I'm not keeping the frogs and the turtles together. The frogs are at work, the turtles are at home. I feed them turtle sticks. They're about the easiest pets in the world to keep.
Title: Re: meet ICE BOX ;-)
Post by: NickC on February 18, 2009, 09:33:54 pm
lol, they are easy to keep! i was kidding about the frogs by the way, i was referring to frogGer...

the turtles we use to have ate frogs, im not sure if all turtles eat frogs though. so what other kinda crazy stuff do you have in tanks, you have turtles, frogs, and you had an octopus, what else is there?
Title: Re: meet ICE BOX ;-)
Post by: mayfair on February 18, 2009, 09:43:45 pm
You name it, I've probably had it. Snakes, frogs, lizzards, hermit crabs ( :43: ), and obviously both fresh and saltwater fish
Title: Re: meet ICE BOX ;-)
Post by: NickC on February 19, 2009, 12:00:37 am
ive never done the hermit crabs although i always wanted one when i was younger. i too have had lizards, frogs, fresh and salt aquariums including sting rays and an octopus. i even have had rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, a chinchilla, dogs, cats, and i even had 5 chickens one summer in my back yard (in a normal city neighborhood ). we are the weird ones on my street! i always wanted a snake but my pop's has got a phobia of them, oh well! this is the tank im working on right now... its my 24G nano cube

you are the only other person i have known to have an octopus other than myself... we are such a special breed  haha!

Nick that looks AWESOME !!! Those clows are jonsin for an anomone though ... LOL !!
Title: Re: meet ICE BOX ;-)
Post by: NickC on February 19, 2009, 06:41:50 am
lol, i hear that often! actually they are just fine without an anemone, and its rare to find a pair like that. once they mate, they remain a pair forever and the fish catchers and pet stores will never separate them because of that, its pretty neat actually!

i wish i could have an anemone though, in a 24G there is not enough room for one due to the fact that they keep moving around until they are comfortable and sting everything on its journey to find that special place. i had a nice anemone in my 55g reef and it was NEVER happy, it always ended up almost dead in my filter because it thought it was a gypsy!

Ok ... here we go ...

First, I took a piece of foam and figured out the shape that I wanted. I didn't meant for it to look like Florida, but it kinda does ...

Here's what it looked like:

Then I started shaping it with a file and stuff:

Then I took a heat gun to it to give it some texture:

I then attached it to a box so that I could work both sides at the same time:

First, I used grout called Hemp :43:, mixed with water and something called Fortifier and slapped it on:

After it dried, I did some more shaping:

Another coat of Grout to give it some more texture:

Then, I did the final coat with a darker colored mortar, again mixed with water and fortifier, but i made it VERY watery:

As it was drying, I worked it with a sprty bottle to kinda wash away some of the mortar so that the lighter grout color would come through ever so slightly. It's really heard to see it in these pics:

And here are some final pics. It's really hard to see the color differences and the texture, but it's there:

whadda ya think?

DUDE!!... thats friggin amazing, thats about as far out of the box one can think! i have never seen that done before, did you get the idea from a write up or did you just wing it on your own? it really looks professional

so is that going to fit in a corner, it looks like its bigger than 12" on one side or does your 120 have 16" width?

Thanks Nick,

I stole the basic idea from a frog website, and then kinda reworked it a bit. My 120 gal is 48"x48"x24", so it'll fit pretty good in a corner. I just hope it works. It's soaking in a trash can now

thats a nice sized tank, sounds like its measurements where picked out by an actually turtle! haha, i bet they will really enjoy the extra room. im not sure if anyone is curious how this is going to turn out, but when you put that new tank together take some pictures. i would like to see how everything comes together... ive always had a high interest for aquariums and everything that goes in them!
