New Transom
« on: December 24, 2009, 03:20:59 pm »
This is my 1988 20' Wellcraft. I'm the original owner and have always kept this boat in either a boat shed or my garage. In years past, I've used it for pleasure riding, fishing, skiing and spearfishing. It's seen hours upon hours of use and is on it's second engine.

After replacing the 200 HP Yamaha engine with a 225 Yamaha 4 Stroke, the added weight along with the deterioration of time took it's toll on my transom. The mounting bolts were being pulled through, indicating my transom was rotten.

I was worried about losing the engine in the drink, so in the shop it went. Not long after, I went over to check on it and this is what the old transom wood looked like.

I couldn't believe my ears when I was told that the old wood from the transom had friggen Termites in it.! It was good that I caught it in time, or I would have lost more than just the engine.

So here's some pic's of the new pressure treated wood going in.

HOLY CRAP!

That woulda SUCKED!

But, you know what they say about boats.....

They're a hole in the water, surrounded by a hull, into which you continuously sink money.

That's true......actually the cost of the repair is about a grand more than what NADA quotes the hull to be worth. But on the other hand, I'll know what I have, this is also a classic hull design, one of the driest hulls ever made in the 20' class, and a HELLAVA lot cheaper than a new hull.

I'll have to ask, but I think that it's only glue or resin.

Either way, the shop owner guaranteed me that I'll never have to worry about the transom again.

Let's see......if I get another 22 years out of that transom.....uah...I'll be 75 years old.

Yup....no worries here. :whistling:

Wow! That was an accident just about to happen. I had to do the same on mine last spring--but on a slightly smaller transom.   Still, with what a 225 4-stroke weighs, its amazing to me that they don't rip right off a new boat! As for the hole in the water to dump money in, I poured 3 grand into a new motor last summer only to use it 4 times the rest of the summer.  Imagine the damage I could've done to my truck with that $3000.  :banging:

I MAY BE OLD, BUT I GOT TO SEE ALL THE GOOD BANDS.....

I'm glad you got that in time that could have been bad.. once its all done it will be worth it spending 25k or more on a Seafox or 32k or more on a Grady white. Fixing your boat for a few grand for another 25 years of use PRICELESS..... Good luck
