545 RFE tranny service
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:29:21 pm »
Hey all,
Going to do a tranny service on my truck.  It has 107,000 miles and I don't know the service history.  Of course, previous owner says the truck has been serviced regularly.  I have no reason to doubt him but when I buy used stuff I like to go through it and plan on the expense of it.
So, it's an 03 with the Hemi and 545 RFE tranny.  Can anyone tell me if this is also the correct procedure for my truck:

I assume it is.  I realize I have a spin-on filter that also needs to be replaced.  I was under it yesterday and made note of the two lines on the passenger side of the tranny.  Is the rear line also the line I want to crack open on the 545 RFE??  Thanks, looks pretty straight forward.  I'll make sure I have a friend around to add fluid as it is draining.

Yup pretty much the same process.  Word of wisdom.  TIGHTEN that spin on filter down TIGHT!  I thought we lost the transmission in our Libby diesel.  Turns out, the spin on filter fell off.

I've never cracked the line and kept adding fluid while it's running.  Probably helps get more trash out of the cooler.  But you'll never get everything out.  If you've got some spare cash, look at the PML deep pan.  They're awesome, plus they have a drain plug.  In any case, toss $20 more to install a drain plug on the stock pan.  You'll thank yourself next service.

Thanks for the tips bud.  Not sure how much more crud it will get out, but opening that line will ensure most of the old fluid gets replaced with new.  I'll look into that pan, a drain plug sure would make for a cleaner job  :banging:  What a tough add-on that would be Mopar  :argh:

Yeah the good ol spin on filter. Id go with an aftermarket one. The mopar filters are bad for cracking and suckin in air and causeing tranny slippage when u first drop it in gear. Good luck with the change out
