led's are on the way...
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:21:26 am »
Finally bit the bullet to do the cluster led conversion (along with headlight switch and hvac controls).  The ash tray and cup holder lights are being converted to blue too, but I now I remember why I stayed away from the conversion to begin with lol.   :$:  Oh well,  I don't expect them to arrive for this weekend so I guess ill mess with them next weekend.  Any 2nd gens out there that have done this?  I saw some 3rd gens in the diy section.

Haha, just for you ed.  I walked outside and just took a vid.  I tried to take pic's but they didn't come out right.  Idk if the lense foged up from being cold outside or what.

Haha, thanks.  Yeah I saw the 3rd gen diy and stuff and got me interested.  The only thing I wish I could get rid of are the "hot spots", although there isn't anything I can really do about it. You can see in the hvac control (top left) it is really bright.  I put the extra bulb too close I guess so it needs to be pushed up in the corner more to get rid of the brightness.  There is nothing I can do about the hot spots on the cluster, although when you look at it in person they arn't as noticable as they are on camera.  The headlight switch came out perfect though...  thats about the only thing.

Thanks, yeah i just remembered I forgot to show the turn signals (converted to blue as well), and I even tossed in an led high beam bulb even though it was basically blue to begin with.

Sorry ed, I didn't take too many.  I have a couple on my phone but we just got dumped on with snow up here and I started the conversion around 12 at night so I was just trying to get done.  The cluster is basically plug and play (when you buy new twist locks).  cluster removal is a breeze.  headlight switch isn't bad but you have to remove stock bulb from the twist lock and drill out the twist lock, and install a prewired led to make that work.  The hvac housing uses two twist locks and two prewired leds, along with tinfoil to help reflect the light.  This is just a basic walk though.  I am not the first to do this (there are plenty of other 2nd gen's who have done this).  If you truly are interested in doing it ed, just let me know and ill help ya out  :punk:

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea, ill keep that in the back of my mind.  I think for now I'll keep it this way and then turn back the brightness a tad and see if that does the trick.  For the pic's I cranked it all the way up.  They are the 5 led (4 side firing, 1 verticle) so that might work.
