3rd Gen Hubs on 2nd Gen 1500?
« on: February 16, 2010, 07:02:58 am »
Can the 3rd or 4th Gen hubs be put on the 2nd Gen 1500? If so, what kind of mods, if any, need to be made?

Welcome!  :fu:  I have no idea how to answer your question.
Life sucks.....so drop your pants and let the good times roll!

I think life is too short to spend your time working someplace where people don't crap their pants at the mere sight of you.

To better understand your question, why would you want to put 3rd gen hubs on your truck?

The hubs on a 2nd Gen are not known for their reliability, and the 3rd gens, while not being that great, seem to have less problems.  As far as swapping them, I haven't heard of anyone that has done it, or attempted it.  The one issue I can see right off the bat is if you did that you'd end up with 8 lugs up front and only 5 in the rear.  I would check over on Pavementsucks.com and ask those guys over there, they are pretty knowledgeable with that kind of stuff.

Thank you for the clarification.  The reason I asked is, you might want to look into this.  Might save you from a bunch of extra fabrication and take care of the hubs at the same time.

Ok, I thought you were talking about the unitized hub bearings on a 4WD truck.  I don't know about the hubs on a 2WD.  Is it possible to grind down the center of the 2nd Gen hub?

No, I dont think so. Ive just never messed with wheels, hubs etc. with any vehicle. ive seen the wheels i want on 2nd Gen trucks on the road, but never had a chance to ask how they made it work.

In that case, ignore the above.  (I was going to say, im still on stock hubs at 112k with no problem).  Either way, I am pretty sure the perfered method is to have the wheels machined to accept the 2nd gen hub.  Most 8lug 2nd gens do the same thing with the hummer rims (have them machined to fit).  Wish you luck.

well im also looking into this cause i had a set of 08 ram 20s bought and tried putting them on my 99 2wd ram and the hub bearing cap first hit then popped that off and then the center part of hub hits where the factory cap would go on an 08 style rim.

couldnt grind them down that far without having the bolt nut and cotter pin stuff sticking out.

i thought about it.

so if they a solution to our 2wd issues of putting newer factory 20s on then someone please speak up lol

yea, not talkin bout 4wd... wanna drop the  2wd 1500 and think the stock 3rd Gen 20"s go perfect with the body style, but it looks horrible with my hub stickin out the center of the wheel.
