Adjusting a Carter AFB Carburetor
« on: May 31, 2010, 03:38:35 am »
Hi All,

I'm helping a buddy adjust a Carter AFB 4-barrel carb on his 76 Dodge PowerWagon with the 440 BB. It seems to be running rich so we turned the mixture screws out and seems to be running richer than before  :banging:

Should we be turning them in or am I missing something. Thanks

been a while since I did a carb adjustmene, but a search on google netted this (which is pretty much what I used to do)

Quote
With the engine at idle turn in the left or right mixture screw until the engine starts to stumble, turn out a 1/4 turn. Now do the same with the other screw. This will lean out the engine, but there is still more to do. set a base line or rpm by adjusting the idle stop screw to a get an even rpm you can remember. turn one mixture screw at a time until you get the highest rpm, adjusting both of the screws. reset the rpm to your base line and do the same over again. This will set the carb up as close to being right as you can. Reset the idle to whatever the specs call for standard or auto trans. If this does not cure the problem you'll have to rebuild the carb. Also if when you are turning the mixture screws and the rpm remains constant, the carb will have to be rebuilt anyway.
