Don't do it. Don't waste your money on a 4Cyl jeep. Even with the 4.10 gears, that thing isn't going to move off road. You are still gonna go through clutches left and right due to feathering the pedal constantly (assuming it is a stick, it isn't listed.)

Hold off man, trust me. My best friend had an 05 wrangler with that 4 banger in it. What a turd that motor was. He had 31's on it on the stock 3.73 gears, and that thing didn't even have enough power to use 6th gear. It actually slowed down in 6th gear, what a pile of crap that thing was. It fell on its face everywhere we went except for the flat sand. If we tried to get out of the wash bottom, the engine was rapping out and smoking the clutch just to keep it from dying trying to get its own weight up.

TRUST ME DUDE, NOT A 4CYL.

With the mods you have done to the Cherokee, you can trade up to something much nicer than a 4banger jeep.

Have a 4 banger sidekick and an old CJ V8 back home the 4 banger outclimbed the CJ evertime... however it is on its 3rd clutch where as the CJ has had the same clutch since I was born (literally)

Just hit 4Lo use 2nd when climbin very light on the clutch and keep it walkin, the V8 was to torqish and blows loose alot easier... kinda a personal preference really...

Shoot ya'll got something in common, ask him to meet up for a climb and do a swap lol if ya'll are happy then trade  :cents:

A V8 is much different from the tried and true 4.0 I6. That is the best engine there is for wheelin; hands down. It has got plenty of power for crawling, great of fuel, and Lightweight. Jeep messed up with the JK's by sticking that 3.8 V6 in them. No balls compared to the 4.0. I have never owned either, but I have quite a bit of experience in all 3 engines. By Buddy had the 4cyl in his wrangler, NO POWER. My buddy Rick back in Texas (now in germany) has an 88 cherokee with the 4.0. Beast of an engine. Even with over 250K on the clock, it still ran strong, and never had any issues in reliability, or lack of power. He still has it, but also has an 08 JK. No power at all. Stock, it wouldn't break the tires loose. Then he lifted it and stuck 35's on it. It could not make it up the hills through Centex without dropping a couple gears. After the re-gearing, it was a whole new ball game, but still didn't have the same power compared to the Cherokee. I can't really say much for it, after all it is the same powerplant the Caravan has.

Anyways, Danny, don't do it man. Test drive the thing first. On the highway, and on the trail. Get that sucker into 6th gear. Do you have an inclinometer? Get it on a 50 degree incline, and see if it crawls up without killing it. 50 degrees is reasonable. Its not pushing it too far back, but it will stress the drivetrain enough to see if it will take it. That is the usual angle for climbing through the fun stuff.

Good stuff AZ. Tell ya what if ya can't figure out your confusion you could always hit up http://hendricks4x4.com/  the white cherokee is Scott's (Buddy's dad's) rig, he builds them for a living, usually good about a bold no BS answer as he has built up quite a few different rigs, tell him what ya wanna do and he'd pry tell ya how he'd do it..... just a thought....

keep us posted  :popc:

Money is always an issue with Danny , as well as just about everyone living in the Southwest. I don't think an engine swap is in order any time soon if that were the case.  :fart:
