This was the original chassis. I had a 350 under the hood, backed by an SM465 4 speed and an NP205 T-case. 12 bolt rear and 10 bolt front, (junk axles from a blazer,) I was going to box the stressed parts of the frame, and put dana 60's under it, and a 12V up front.

I'm looking at this pic and it has me wondering:

I was told not to secure my golf cart across the front like that because it could crack the body (your yellow straps), but I always see people strapping them down that way. Have you ever heard of any problems securing them across the body?

I'm also curious ... I see that in most of the pictures that you secure your cars simply by wrapping the tire, and yet when you have a wheel like a Cragar, you choose to go through it. Why? Don't you run a risk of damaging the wheel that way?

Like you just about every golf cart I've ever seen hauled is strapped down this way. I've never heard of or seen one damaged from it, but I can see how it could happen if you got carried away.

You're correct. When the wheel design allows it, I go through the wheel and not around the tire (as do most haulers that use this style strap). I do this for a couple of different reasons. 1- It is a more secure way to tie-down the car, the strap can't come off and it's faster. 2- When you go around the tire instead of through the wheel you risk damaging the strap and anything on the backside of the tire (brake lines, abs sensors etc...)

The straps are not all that abrasive and don't rub (or move around on) the wheel while in transit. If it's a brand new vehicle or has really nice rims then I error on the side of caution and go around the tire to eliminate the risk of scratching the rims. So far (insert smiley knocking on wood here) I've never scratched a rim with the straps.

Thanks for asking

Thanks for getting back to me.
It's been a real PITA strapping mine down from the frame because it sits so low, but now after hearing from you, I'll go across the body like you did there. It'll make life MUCH easier!

Mayfair, just don't strap it TOO tight... that's probably where the issue is.

This was an interesting one. 12 vehicles - Ranged from 1960's Saab's and Volvo's and a few "newer" ones (late 70's, early 80's). Most of them barely fit on the trailer because of the narrow wheel base, they rubbed all the way up! A few didn't even roll because the brakes were seized up so they sent a crew out to free them up. Paid pretty good, but we're still not sure it was worth the hassle of extra help we had to bring out plus another truck to help drag them around  ;)

They went to a Classic car dealer in Seattle. This is one load we took from their showroom down to a Portland Auction...

1973 Volvo, all original w/ 33k miles

Absolutely perfect 1967 Chevelle
