Auto trans on 96 4wd
« on: February 10, 2011, 12:14:10 am »
My 96 Ram 4wd with auto trans makes a very loud groaning noise shortly after running.  The sound goes away after shifting into neutral for a few seconds, then returns a short time later. Don't know if it's trans or maybe torque converter. Any help would be helpful.

Have you checked the fluid level? when was the last time you had it changed?

The 42/46 and I think the 48 too RE transmissions don't pump the fluid around in park, only in gear or neutral.

Does it do it more in reverse than anyother gear? If so its the pressure regulator valve in the valvebody. The were made of a lightweight alloy and would buzz, there was a TSB to change them to a steel valve to stop the buzz. If the noise is more than a buzz and more like a power steering pump with low fluid type sound, then that may be your torque converter. Usualy first signs of failure.
