Lesson 11: Digitally Enhancing an Image
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:23:02 pm »
Been awhile since I've done one of these.   Anyways, this may be more useful to those of you who like to take and share lots of pictures.

What we are going to do is to mimic an HDR photo.  The process is fairly simple, but the results are highly dependent on the quality of the original photo.

Lets start with a recent picture that appeared in ROTM.  Here's Tommygunz's new truck.

Start by duplicating the background layer.

With the new layer selected, go to image>adjustments>shadow/highlight.

When you open this tool for the first time, you get a limited set of options.

Select show more options

Here you get to play with a bunch of options to enhance the image.  The shadow and highlight settings shown are a good baseline to start with and work fairly well across a wide variety of photos.  The other adjustments: color correction, mid-tone contrast and clipping are extremely photo/personal preference dependent.

Set the duplicated layer to blend mode overlay and the image is done

A quick before and after

Here we look at the difference in clipping.  Notice how in the second image, the dark spots are darker and the light spots are lighter.

Combine the two above adjustments with layer setting overlay and color

Were you parents related? Like before they were married?

Give me a smart idiot over a stupid genius any day.
