12V power
« on: March 05, 2011, 09:21:44 am »
I ride my bike quite a bit. I drive my truck maybe 10 miles a week now. I also listen to music while I ride. Well, Pandora radio eats up Battery life pretty good. So, I went to Harley to see if there was any power adapter available for the Dyna. No, there is not. Just the Road/Street/Electra Glides. So I set out to do a custom job.

So I buy the Harley power outlet, and set out to chase some wires with my DMM. I take off the seat, and what do I see? A fused accessory wire with the same plug as my kit.

2 hours later and a lot of wire routing, I now have a 12V jack to plug my car charger in.

Tomorrow I am going to a buddy of mines leather shop to get a leather pocket made for my phone to mount onto the leather strip between my tank and seat.

Then Sunday, some friends and I are going on a day long ride to Tombstone. It is about 4 1/2 hours 1 way through the scenic routes of Southern Arizona. I will try and get some pics along the way.

So here are some pics of my custom rigging.

This is the Harley 12V outlet.

The male end is the 12V outlet, and the female end is the acc plug I found under the seat.

The wire mess under the seat where I found the acc wire after some digging

The opening in the top left of the fuse box is where the outlet is going to sit after I find a 7/8 hole saw.

Where my finger is touching is where the black H-D cap will stick out of the fuse box cover.

This is where it is currently temporarily mounted.

Key off......

Key on......

....and she works!  This is where my phone will sit after I get the pocket made.

Nice!

Have you seen the bar mounted stereo systems available?  They are pretty sweet...

Nice job Mitch.

It's always cool when we can make something work the way we want it too... even if the manufacturer didn't intend on it working that way in the first place!

Tom- I have not. I don't think I have seen it. Do you have a link?

I found some new pipes last night.

How do you think those would look wrapped in white header tape?

Mitch - here's a link to a set that take MP3 or Iphone input

Good review on the v-twin forum, but I have no personal experience with them

I like those pipes - guy I ride with has them on a rocker - they look great!

I'm not a fan of wrapped pipes (except on an old pan-head), but its what you like, not me

That is pretty cool.

If the bike was anything other than denim black, I wouldn't do it. But the styling cues of the all flat coloring and chrome allow it. I'll hold off on the wrap for a little bit, until the paint starts to chip away from road debris

Now that is a great idea.  I might just have to look into that.

Coming in a little late, but you know that you can get that leather strip with a pouch already sewn in - right?
Typically they're used for phones or ciggs

I know, but I want one made for me. The value and pride is there when it is hand made
