backlash

backlash= excessive movement on the input of a diff.
my friends 2005 (lifted) 1500 front driveshaft can turn about an eighth or so with the truck in park. Is this a problem with the diff. or the transfer case.
It makes a rattling (loose) sound when driving, and is even more noticeable when in 4 wd. He just bought the truck last week. Whats yalls opinion, and the verdict?

Pop the front cover off the diff and measure it with a dial indicator. You wont get a good reading off driveshaft rotation as that also includes side/spider gear and axle shaft play. I wouldnt think backlash would cause a rattle noise though.

could be the transfer case .. but could be the diff maybe a gear is cracked or something let go.... try puttin her on four stands removing the front drive and isolating the diff if its still there then its lookin like the transfer case ... unless coming from the rear ?

never noticed the date hope ya found the trouble
