2012 Avenger trunk lid and rain
« on: December 05, 2011, 07:16:12 pm »
Hello! New Dodge owner -- 'bout 6 weeks.

I noticed something this weekend. We got some much-needed rain, and I had to go grocery shopping. When I raised the trunk lid, rainwater ran toward the latch and into the trunk. Not just a little drip -- quite a bit of water. So much that when I got home, I put a towel in there to soak it up -- I don't want it to mildew.

Made me wonder where all that water came from -- it was almost like it was inside the trunk lid itself. I figured out if I kind of bounce the trunk lid up and down before opening it all the way, it helps a bit, but this is odd.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

If Parts/service (Dave) is around he could probably help.

I think I'm going to have to call the dealer -- today wasn't as rainy, but I popped the trunk to see how things looked. When I raise and lower the lid, I can hear water sloshing around, and quite a bit still runs out through the latch.

The fabric covering the inside of the lid is dry. It seems that rainwater is actually collecting inside the trunk lid. Over time, I'm worried about rust and/or mold. Not good.

On a positive note, the rubber gaskets around the doors do a great job of keeping the seating compartment dry!

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome to DOF!

If you are under warranty, let the dealer check it out.

Can we see a picture of the trunk lid and the seal?
Life sucks.....so drop your pants and let the good times roll!

I think life is too short to spend your time working someplace where people don't crap their pants at the mere sight of you.

I think I know what the problem is -- last night I Googled "trunk lid fills with water" and found that many cars (including Cadillac and Mercedes) have this problem. The owner of an '09 Avenger posted his experience on another forum. The leak comes from either the spoiler (which I do not have) or the third brake light (which I do have).

Folks have solved the problem by running a bead of silicone to fill the gap. Since my car is less than two months old, I will let the guys at the dealer dry out the trunk lid and seal the space for me.

Thanks!

PS: I don't know how to post pics, but my Avenger SXT is Tungsten with the Black/Light Frost interior. It's purty.

Welcome :gnome:

I agree, the dealer can figure it out  :D

I had a Mazda that leaked, it was from a tail light and the silicone does work by the way

Picked up my baby today -- the guy said the leak was around the brake light. He said they dried everythng out and sealed it, and replaced the lamp. Woo hoo!

Update: It's been raining most of the day. When it stopped, I checked the trunk lid -- no water! Yay!
