Dead 2nd gen.
« on: April 08, 2012, 02:34:35 am »
Buddy at work has a son with a 2nd gen truck, '96-'97 I believe. 360 gas, auto. Truck was working fine, no problems. Came home from work one night shut it down. Next morning went to start it and nothing. Dead in the water. From what I gather it rolls over but no fire. Problem is his son lives 500-600 miles away. He is being told by someone local that the ECM is shot.  I know that being an electrical part it can go bad, but man seems like a extreme rarity that a ECM just up and dies. Truck is pretty much stock with a big lift and tires. From what his dad has been able to decipher during 'phone repair' is that there is no spark. Other than looking for bad grounds, chafed/shorted wires, etc. anyone have any ideas?

Never even thought of that. That very well could be the answer.

the ECM going bad happens while it's running the majority of the time. at least from what i gather from reading online.

there is also a possibility that "no bus" will appear in the Odometer. but I'm not sure since it's a 96-97.

i'd also go with the crank sensor before putting much more money into it.

Dam thing sits on 44's so the turbo would get plenty of clean air.....

Sho and Buford hit it on the head. He found a used one, installed it and the truck fired right up. He's going out today for a new one. Thanks guys!
