Help talk me out of thinking bad about Dodge
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:25:21 pm »
I feel like my 08 6.7L 3500 is going to let me down because of the emmissions or because Utah, specifically Salt lake county, demands emmisions testing. With just 31K miles I had to have the EGR, DPF, Radiator cap and CVF (the filer for crank case) replaced. I tow, I run the freeways as much as possible when I drive. the real short trips are in the car. I hear all these great reports from those that have deleted the emissions crap of 16 in town and 21 on the road, so, I'm feeling like I shafted my self  :banging: I have know idea about the problems that Ford and Chevy have with emmissions, but is this a problem with Dodge.

Welcome to emissions, everyone has those issues, just be happy it's not a class 8 truck. ISX EGR is $750, EGR cooler is around $1000.

Actually the way it works is, the EPA sets the goals for the engine manufacturers to achieve, they don't tell them how to achieve it. The engine manufacturer finds the LEAST expensive way to meet those goals. This is where the problem comes in. As we all know, the least expensive way is not always the best way to get to a goal....

Now I know the next thing someone is going to say is that the goals are absurd. I wouldn't argue that point at all. Gas engines went through these growing pains in the 70's and 80's and now emission compliant gas engines are pretty reliable and somewhat efficient. I only hope that the diesel market finds new ways to hit the goals and produce good longevity and efficiency too.

It's very much a problem with all of the manufacturers, not just Dodge.

The first few years (07.5 - 09) were growing pains for everyone.

New ideas are coming about every day too. On my VW TDI they have two separate egr paths. One of them is more traditional, the other one takes exhaust from after the DPF. This means MUCH less soot is being fed back into the engine. They also mounted the cat/dpf right to the exhaust flange of the turbo so that regens are less frequent and less lengthy.

You didn't pay for the EGR and DPF did you? It was replaced under warranty?

I wonder if the issues you are having is related to the '08s? I have a couple friends in MT that have nothing but problems with theirs. One of them had some many problems with the DPF in the first year alone that Chrysler had it removed by the dealer (his was bought new)

Another friend bought his used and was towing his boat back from a week of fun (a couple years ago now) and his dpf choked, truck went into limp mode, and had to have the boat and truck towed home (about 4hrs I think).

I would do a stealth delete and be done with it!

My '08 has 235k miles on it and is completely bone stock! It may have been worked a little harder than yours though. The harder it's worked the fewer problems you "should" have. Mine is also a C&C, so some of the emissions are a little different.
