Turbo bad?
« on: June 04, 2012, 02:50:04 am »
So, I got a little curious today as how my twins looked since they were installed about 7k miles ago.  I noticed that I had a little bit of an oil leak on my primay.  I got a little concerned when I had an oil drop hanging off the compressor housing band clamp.  I pulled the pipe off that goes between the primary and secondary and this is what I found.

I am praying that it is oil from my AFE being pulled in and not engine oil.  There is a light oil residue/dirt coating on the intake of the secondary but very minimal.  Thanks.

Austin

Check out the shaft play.  Was it new at 7K?

No, it was used.  Pulled the intake last night and the shaft feels pretty tight.  I measured axial and radial play before I installed it and it was within spec.

You could clean it and put it back together and just keep an eye on it, or you could send it off and have it gone through.

I cleaned it up as best as I could and put it back together.  Now I was told that when my boot popped off, it will spit oil into the compressor housing.

You'll see it on whatever side failed. Seeing it on the exhaust side is a little tougher because everything is already black.

There's really no definite side one way or the other.

Most of the time, if the seals failing the bearing is toast also.

For now.  I am just going to keep and eye on it and see if anymore oil shows up.  Found a rebuild kit for $75 if that turns out to be the case.

Yeah, that's the good thing. As long as there's no housing contact and the shaft didn't get torn up, rebuild kits are pretty cheap.

I dropped all the turbos we had sitting here off at TD&E in Atlanta the other day to have them checked, rebuilt and balanced.
