New Guy with a few Questions?
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:44:56 pm »
 Greeting,

Just took delivery on my new to me truck and need some advice on a few things.

First off this is my 1st diesel so this a learning process for me. I want to replace all the fluids etc.. so as to have a reference or known starting point with this truck.

It’s an early 2004 3500 dually 4x4 automatic with 4.10 gear ratio and 150k on it.

The first thing I did was change the oil and filter, with a mopar filter and the Valvoline premium blue oil, that was the easy one but not sure what to do with the trans.
It looks like someone way over serviced it and the fluid stinks not quite burnt but stinks not sure how else to explain it. It seems to shift very smooth one minute then other times it’s like it gets stuck then shifts fairly hard. So from what I have read on the forum I am going to change the fluid and replace the Pressure Solenoid with a Borg Warner Governor & new OEM Pressure Transducer. This leads me to the main question I have is do I adjust the bands while I am in there or leave them alone?

Also the build sheet states that it has an anti spin differential? Don’t fully understand that so I jacked it up and put the trans in neutral and spun the tires and they move in opposite direction for whatever that means, but do I need to add anything, additives / fluid change to the differentials?

Thanks in advance don’t know what I would do without such a wealth of knowledge found here.

Welcome.

Here's a DIY for the transmission fluid and filter.

Here's the band adjustment.

Here's the differentials. No you don't need additive. Just synthetic 75w90 gear lube.

Good luck.

FYI, I save a few bucks by buying the filters at my local Cummins Store, rather than the Dodge dealer. I think they are the same, except the stamp on the box.
