2004 SLT 4x4 5.9L... is this a good deal?
« on: January 13, 2013, 01:34:18 am »
Howdy Folks, some of you may remember me from a little over a year ago when I was running a 2005 5.9L.

I picked up a 2009 F-250 when I burnt the rings on my Dodge. As usual life changes and deals new cards. I'm looking to shed debt and I've spotted a truck here locally that I wanted to get some opinions on.

It's a 2004 SLT 5.9L 4x4 Quad Cab. 280,000 miles running Amsoil, recent tranny rebuild with ATS TC and "aftermarket" 2nd gear. I have to assume it's ATS as well.

He says he's always run Amsoil in the engine, tranny, and diffs. Claims it's never been tuned and that a vast majority of the miles are highway running from central Texas to the Panhandle for work.

He's got a new kid and is signing papers on house and needs a down payment as the story goes. He's asking 16k but I'm confident I can wave 14 grand in cash at him and drive off in it.

Should I?

DoF, it's like family, but with more straight jacket and less restraining order.

Sounds like WAY to much money to me for 280k miles.

Good grief, what could I get for my '08 with 242k on it???

For $16k you could probably get a 2nd gen with half the miles....

Just for giggles I ran it thru NADA for my area. Clean trade in is around $10,500 with Clean retail around $13,500. Add about $5500 for the diesel option and subtract $2800 for the high miles you wind up around $16,500. So technically $14k would be a good deal. But alot has to be factored in. Prices vary alot from one side of the country to the other. Plus overall condition too. Around me that truck in really nice condition would sell all day long at $14k.

As for the Amsoil, that's good. But amsoil seems to have a adverse effect on auto trans behind a diesel. Have it checked at a garage to confirm everything is up to snuff. Maybe start at $12k and work from there?

I MAY BE OLD, BUT I GOT TO SEE ALL THE GOOD BANDS.....
