Coolant leak
« on: March 21, 2013, 11:59:58 pm »
Damn...I've been losing about a quart of coolant a week and after chasing the normal hose/connections possibilities without solving it I finally got down under the truck ('99 ctd) to see what the problem could be...CRAP...I can see where the coolant has been coming out at the rear of the head. All the frost plugs are dry and do not appear to be the problem...all visual indications point to a head gasket leak. is this common on the 5.9 Cummins motors? Will I be able to change the head gasket without pulling the motor out of the truck?

My leak was coming out of the small rubber hose connecting the two metal coolant lines  that runs around the head from the right to left side of the engine. Mines an automatic though and this connections sits right at the #6/5 exhaust ports.

I will check both but you can see where the coolant has been running down the bellhousing and the wetness at the head/block connection. I will get a pic tomorrow and post it so you can see what I'm seeing...

Well changed out the bad head gasket and ended up replacing a cracked head as well :banging:...Everythings working as it should now but I have noticed that the top radiator hose is sucking flat after the motor cools...should I be concerned about this?
