Also look at a Posi-lok cable actuated CAD for the front axle to replace the vacuum system. It is a lot more reliable, has the potential to increase your mileage, and gives you the option of a 2wd low range.

What is a Posi-lok cable actuated CAD?

welcome... and your wants aren't unreasonable... but they'll take some money and time.

one of the biggest drawbacks to the 5.9 is that is VERY over fuelled. to help with this you could get an SCT tuner and have someone trim back the fuel. (you'll need an AFR gauge to properly tune)

most likely, the plenum gasket has blown. the cheapest route is to just replace the gasket. the "better" route would be to get an M-1 intake,  hughes air gap, or something similar. i have a 2bbl M-1 intake on my 01 quad cab dakota. I also have shorty headers, Harland Sharpe 1.7 roller rockers and the Mopar Performance valve covers with matching air cleaner. another thing that would help is a better flowing exhaust... 2.5in is big enough for the motor, but remove the cats to free up the exhaust some.

I have the AWD transfer case and on stock setup i was seeing a best of 12mpg. after them, i'm seeing a best of 16mpg.

the headers and intake manifold will allow more air in, more air out. better combustion.

The harland sharpe 1.7's (non-adjustable) are an easy bolt on mod that opens your valves earlier and hangs them open longer. (stock ratio is 1.6) this allowing more time for exhaust to get out and more air to get into the cylinder.

the orange items are the roller rockers

here is the intake manifold

here's an overall view of the engine back together.

here's the truck (should also show some of the headers)

Very nice.  This is what I am looking for.  I currently have a small coolant leak.  I am thinking very small head gasket leak.  I blow white smoke out in the morning until it warms up.

I will have to take care of this first though?  Unless maybe an additive?  If I have to redo the heads and cylinders, I may as well just do some upgrades while at it.  Any ideas?

White smoke is most likely oil... from your plenum gasket leaking. (Manifold is aluminum and the plate is steel. Expansion and contraction kill the gasket)

You very well may have a coolant leak as well. Common issues are the thermostat gasket, waterpump, waterpump gasket and even the timing cover gasket.

A good days worth a work for the coolant issue. About a weekend for everything.

Good upgrades while digging in this far...

New Waterpump
Dual timing chaim
Intake manifold (aftermarket) or the hughes plate (you can use 1/4in thick aluminum plate)
Roller rockers
180* thermostat

Misc paint and dressup

Sounds good thus far.  Will my death flash messup anything with these changes?

I'm still kinda lost lol this is the first time I've heard about it.

Couldn't the pcm be taken to a dealer and reset essentially?

No it is a dealer flash and any flash will contain this change that the dealer can do, it was only done on the ram's and i thought only the 318.

hhmmm....

since the Dakota can run on a Ram PCM.... why wouldn't the Ram be able to run on a Dakota PCM? simple swap and done.

I am not sure but i don't think the death flash affected anything from 99 and up, but it has been awhile since i looked into it.

And blue smoke is oil, white is coolant or sometimes high humidity, as I remember it.

well, other than checking the fluids and keeping an eye on them... if the headgasket IS bad, there is a test for it!

I know on one of the many machines in this household we have a copy of the TSB for the "death flash" I think  it might have been 09-06-99.  Before Dodge started calling for a replacement of the Plenum plate there was a flash to the ECM to drop the fueling or something.  It was a band-aid that ended up causing more harm that it cured.

CCD if you haven't looked over it yet here is a thread covering the Plenum replacement

I think Hughes recently updated their kit to come with the cross-over hose & the thermostat.  So some of the 'extra's may not be needed anymore.
