Laundry list
« on: June 23, 2013, 08:00:55 am »
So after sitting for around 5 years, my dad decided to start using this 87 d350 chasis truck that has a flatbed on it.  I've rebuilt the carb, I have a new ignition coil to put on it as well.  The list of things wrong with it are as follows.

It runs fine until it hits operating temp, then it starts to miss and bog down or just die while in gear, it sputters and hesitates until it dies on hills.  It has a horrible vibration to it, so much so that it shakes everything on the truck and in the engine compartment.  I would love to check the timing, but the smog pump is in the way, so I have no idea how to check the timing, aside from time it by ear..

All suggestions, solutions, and just general info is appreciated

btw, it has a carter AFB competition series 4bbl carb (I rebuilt it). :fart:

Vibration; check the condition of your carrier bearing. Grab the driveshaft and shake it.
For the drivability concerns, pull your spark plugs and tell us the condition. Take pictures. If its been sitting for 5 years it needs a good tune up. Drop the fuel tank, give it a good steam cleaning, and flush the fuel lines. Gas doesn't like time at all.

The vibration is constant, if not worse in park.  The truck only has 80k on it.  I haven't pulled any plugs, but I know they were replaced with plugs from another 360.  The biggest problem is my dad originally had this "friend" work on it and the guy only puts effort into things he wants to fix..  I'll get engine bay pics today as I need to go put the new ignition coil on it.

Have you checked your transmission mount and engine mounts?

The engine had used plugs installed? Why?

Mounts are good, used plugs because of budget, I'm going to replace them as soon as I can spare the dough.  Probably replace the wires too as the ones on it are ridiculously tiny and old to boot...

Kingman isn't that bad. Aside from being detached from the rest of Arizona it's an ok place. Lots of history, and the weather is decent. It could be worse, you could live in Yuma. May as well be living in Mexico

Just off the top of my head, the vibration might be from not running on all cylinders. Sounds like the first order of business is a complete tune up. Don't know the rules in Arizona, but up here in michigan that air pump would wind up in a scrap dumpster some where.

I'm with Ken on this.  I'd start with a tune-up.  Hit up plugs, wires, cap, rotor and all the filters to start.

No emissions or inspections in Kingman. Toss it. The only thing it's good for is blowing up air mattresses while camping.

I'm heading that way, at least if I do that I can time it with a light.

I just replaced the coil, and wires as the old wires fell apart when I went to gap the plugs, which were all way smaller than .035

I tuned the carb but gave up after turning the idle mixture screws out several turns and having it still die upon putting it into gear, I'll mess with it more tomorrow..  (its 10pm for me)

Tomorrow I'll be replacing the ballast resistor and ICM to see if that helps along with removal of smog pump and timing the engine.
