02 cummins 5.9l 24valve
« on: August 05, 2013, 06:52:14 pm »
this is my first time posting something on a forum so i hope this works. I have just bought a 2002 dodge ram 3500 with the 5.9l 24valve cummins. the truck only has 95000 miles on it and also has the juice with attitude in cab tuner. its not a dully. When i first got the truck i was expecting it to run about like my friends 2012 6.7HO. im not happy with how its running. Im looking for some power adders to make the truck run and pull better, any tips on what to do please comment!!! also if i turn the tuner up to race or extreme it doesnt dump ANY black smoke out the exhaust. Please help!!!!

Have you check to see if the pump wire has been tapped?

Of course it isn't going to run like your friends' 2012, it has nearly twice the power yours does.

How much power do you want to make in the end?
2022 2500 Laramie CCLB, 6.7 CTD, stock
57 Chevy 3200 pickup, 12V swap
1985 Jeep CJ10A former Tug- Dana 60, 6cyl Nissan diesel
2020 Mahindra Roxor, Dana 60s F/R, Ag tires

You always have a few questions to answer before anyone can give you a good idea of where to start with modding your truck.

What do you want to do with the truck? What I mean is, what do you do with the truck everyday and what do you want it to do?

Basically it breaks down like this:
Do you want speed?
Do you want to tow heavy?
Do you want fuel economy?

You can't have all three so choose wisely.

Throwing black smoke isn't going to make you more power.  I would probably start with the basics, putting a good lift pump such as an air dog or something like that.  What does it have for a trans?

1970 Chevelle 496 Single 101mm Turbo . . . Stock door panels and rear seat. (It was easier to say what is stock than list all the mods.)
2004 Duramax Heavy Dooty, Edge CTS, S&B intake, MPRP exhaust

1965 Corvette Stingray (Dad's car)
1970 Corvette Convertible (Mom's car)
1931 Sedan Delivery (Grandfather's, bought new)

Ok enough with the fun & pokes... Lets get serious here...(well as serious as we can get around here)

What's a serious path to lay out to turn up an '02? What are the pit falls to avoid? What are the weak links to fix first?

Vp44 already mentioned...this goes under weak link. Air dog / fasts mentioned to fix. Once fuel pressure is addressed then injectors & a different tuner can be looked at for more power.

(That's where the black smoke comes from...unburnt fuel. Really it's not a great thing. Why waste something that cost so :sensor: much. The goal is that fine line where you've got the fuel needed but not so much it's running hot or out the tail pipe)

If its an automatic then the trans will need love before to much power is added. Valve body, torque converter; what else am I not thinking of here guys? If its a manual what will the stock clutch hold?

Friends don't let friends buy VP44's!

NOW ya tell me  :bat:

I had an '01 that had a hot rodded pump in it, ran a tuner that began with a big red B.  The only time it smoked was when I killed the 2nd pump on the way back from Forida.  800 miles at 55mph looking like a steam train.. :banging:
You can't fix stupid

Start saving your pennies. You're approaching the trans rebuild mileage. 115-140k is usually the range it craps out, so might as well start addressing that.

The lift pump is a no brainer on a VP truck, that and a fuel pressure sensor / gauge.

Oh FYI.  Unless your looking for 750+ HP out of it, stick with the VP.  P24V's arent very DD with big power.
