RPG Rear Paint Guard EPIC FAIL-BEWARE
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:35:44 pm »
WARNING!!!!!

I purchased a rear bumper guard in BLACK from RPG  at w w w (dot) rearpaintguards (dot) com

The product fit perfect but the black was a RUBBER paint, and all the dust stuck to it.

No worries.. I can wipe it down... (I thought)

NOT... the next day, all the ridges started to peel up. The unit was a SILVER one they sprayed with black rubber paint, like that stuff they put on a screen door in the bottom of a boat and it floats..(as seen on tv).

It alllllll peeled off.. Just rubbed off... big rubber sheets that were stretchy.

Now I have a perfect silver unit (that was painted) on my Journey and have no idea how to get the 3M tape off without destroying the bumper.

I paid $132 for the product, it fit nice.. but the paint was total garbage.

How can this protect your paint, if the paint on it just rolls off?

AVOID...AVOID... AVOID...

Company did not reply, I am TRYING to get paypal to dispute, as the website showed nice BLACK PLASTIC units ( not painted ones... as the underside of mine was silver... and the web showed the undersides as black.)

The paypal charge was from another company in Korea.

When they finally replied, the didn't read my issue, and told me the glue should not fall off. (I asked how to remove the unit)
They never read the complaint, declined a refund, and made some generic comment not related to the issue.     :banging:

Here are some photos and a video I made and put on a website..

http://dudinsky.wix.com/avoid-rpg     (NO .COM  at the end of the address)

A dog, sitting on the unit and tying your shoes will rub off this rubber paint stuff (and be all over you and your dog)
Rubber paint is all over the driveway, and my carpet.

NOTE: The paypal bill was from some Korean website, NOT the one I bought from.

NO reply ... that made any sense

I asked
1) How to remove this.. ( to replace .. send back)
2) do they make a black MOLDED unit
...
etc..

the ONLY reply was..
1) NO refund
2) that it should not fall off if installed correctly.

Not sure if they actually READ the complaint...as I asked HOW TO REMOVE IT without damaging the paint.. NOT a complaint that it fell off.

PLasti-dip is correct.. looks like the stuff.

Their website has NO phone # to call.

And .. hey.. I will be honest.. if I wanted a silver unit.. it would be 100% great.. but my trim is all black.. I ordered black.. it was a tacky rubber coating... that rolled off...
I didn't want silver.. (its now 99% silver... only under the lip its still black.. so at least its one color.  The WRONG one... but all silver.)

I wonder if I can get a body shop to spray it black?

I am getting NO REPLY from these people... no solution.. no resolution..
And WITHOUT installing it..I would never have know it was bad... ie: sit on the bumper your pants get black... I have rubber paint in the trunk from it rubbing off (saved it as proof)

A really good product that someone did a really bad thing to and tried to paint black.

ALSO.. the pay pal complaint IS FROM A TOTALLY DIFFERENT COMPANY!!!!!

The company name is Korean Imports something or other...
Prob some guy drop shipping out of his basement.. never seeing the parts...

or a VERY small operation.

And look at the INSANE warranty policy:

'We will not accept a return of an item that is damaged or defective if it has been used/installed please inspect all orders as soon as you receive them and report any issues within 72 hours of receipt."

HOW COULD I TEST THE PAINT IF IT WAS NOT INSTALLED AND PUT INTO SERVICE!?!?!?!?!?!?!

BEWARE!!!!!

Hate to tell you, but ANY part that has been fit and installed won't be returned. If you don't like paint or quality then it's your responsibility to notify the company and correct the issue before you trim it or fit it. That's pretty much a universal policy.

I didn't mind the paint quality..
When I inspected it looked ok... funny rubber coating.. but I was fine with that.

UNTIL IT PEELED OFF WITHIN 24 HRS

I worked in quality at Ford of Canada (6 Sigma) Believe me.. this is a paint defect.
Installed or not.. it should be replaced. I will peel it off and send it back.

I am not going to leave it out on my balcony for a few days to see if the paint will peel off before installing it.

That makes no sense.

If the dealer paints your bumper and installs it... then the paint peels..they replace it.. or repaint it.

It gets fixed.

I showed the dealer, and another friend that used to supervise the paint booth.. they laughed at the coating used, and said it would never last... they said I was lucky that it all came off leaving me with a silver unit. (black under the lip.. but its not too obvious)

I had a wind screen on my truck. It was installed. It cracked a few days in. They said to cut it off, and it was replaced. It had really thick foam tape that I was able to slice through with dental floss slowly.

Oh.. NO TRIMMING was needed.
It just popped on...and glued down with 3m tape.
Used 4 snaps already on the  car.
If I could debond the 3m tape.. I would be happy and remove it.
(I am worried the paint will suffer)

Finally got a reply for RPG.

They said they were out of the black plastic rear paint guards, so they sprayed a silver one with plasti-dip type product.
If I like they said just peel it off.
If not they will provide me with instructions on how to remove it and send it in for refund.
They told me the plasti-dip solution to making silver bumper guards black does not work, and they are stopping doing this.

I await their instructions on how to remove the damaged one.
