Truck sputtering
« on: October 20, 2013, 03:19:09 pm »
It's starting to get a little cold and have noticed the truck sputts/sputters a little (sometimes a lot) till it gets to running temperature. Any ideas why the truck would be doing this?

Truck has a cold air intake (banks with scoop).

Just idling it would take a long time to get to running temps, so a little concerned on what to expect as it gets even colder.

Actually yes, should have said that.  Does sound like a miss. On a gas truck I would categorize it as it sounds like the choke is not working:)

Sounds like you've got an injector going out

ugh.. don't tell me that. Was hoping I had the truck running good enough to not replace them.  But if the injector was going out why would it be fine after it has been running for a while?

I had an injector start to go in January 2011. Finally failed in April 2013. Not a wise decision to let it go for so long, but I like to live dangerously

Finally found the problem. Smelled fuel yesterday when I parked and noticed a large pool of fuel under where you drain the fuel filter. Thought I might had not closed the lever enough. But turns out the plastic cap on top of the fuel filter was loose by several turns. Tighten it up and truck runs better than it ever did. Now running a tank through to see if it has been loose my whole time causing fuel mileage issues. It definitely has respectable power now off the line!
