To clean or not to clean...
« on: December 25, 2013, 10:30:28 pm »
A brand new gun?

My wife got me the gun I've wanted for a long time for Christmas. She got me the XDM 40 caliber with 4.5 inch barrel.

My Sig made it very clear in the owners manual to clean the weapon before using it for the first time.

I went through the owners manual for the xdm from front to back and it doesn't say it's required to clean before use. I disassembled and inspected it and the barrel is clear and not wet inside. Everything else was clean and had a decent amount of oil on it....

What say you??

Personally the best cleaning I give a gun is when it is new.  Some of my guns have come with something coating the barrel some don't.

I never cleaned any of mine minus a wipe down prior to their first range... but I did clean all my stuff after range trips

Same here, never cleaned a new gun. Just gave it a good inspection first and they all have been pretty clean from the get go. Was a little hesitant with my Beretta being my first auto, but looked good and worked flawlessly. Most of my handguns are revolvers so a lot easier operations. Same goes for my rifles and shotguns. Last time I seen a real need for a new gun to be cleaned was many, many years ago when my dad got a surplus A3-03. Was coated in cosmoline. Haven't seen that stuff in years (thank god) as recently my buddy acquired a surplus mauser and mosin-nagant that were ready to run.

Nice looking piece Nick.

Thanks all. I'm going to schedule a little range time to get acquainted with it. :)
