Differential servicing question
« on: February 25, 2014, 01:18:19 am »
I have a 2005 Dodge 1500 with 5.7L and it is 4x4.  I want to service the differentials myself this spring.  What type of oil should I use?  How much do I need?  Is it a very difficult job?  Any pointers would be helpful.  Thank you

Loosen hardware, drain. Tighten hardware, fill till it leaks out the hole. Done.

Pretty simple job really. Just a little messy but not bad. Can't go wrong with just about any well known brand of oil. I myself use amsoil in the rear axle (2wd).

Thanks guys for the input.  Is Amsoil an easy to find oil or does it need to be ordered?  I have heard of it in my atv catalogs but have never used it.  Thanks

If you have a limited slip make sure it has the LS additive.

I am not sure if it has a limited slip or not.  Is there an easy way for a novice like me to find out?  Will it be in my manual somewhere?  Apologies for my ignorance.  Thanks

Very rarely is Amsoil found in stores. Usually need to purchase through a dealer or can be ordered on there web site. My local parts store used to carry it on the shelf and the distrib. is only 1 mile away. So not much of a hassle for me. I've also used Royal Purple and regular dino oils without problems.

Looking in my manual, I have limited slip. If I go with Royal Purple it is already added but it is pretty costly like the Amsoil products.  I can get it in Lucas Oil and they are quite a bit cheaper.  Just need to figure out how much I need.  I don't see amounts in my manual for it.  Thanks again

Remember you get what you pay for.  Yes the big names have some $$ tired up pushing thier name but you also are paying for all that R&D that goes into a good product.  Yupe the diff service with a good quality  synthetic is going to cost you a few dollars more. .. but what does a new gear set cost?

For quantities check the link in my Sig.  I've got a lot of the owner / service manuals pulled together there.

Dodge spec is not to fill it til it runs out of the hole.  They want the oil level to be about 1/4" below the hole.
