04 durango, 4.7L, 'sudden' oil usage,
« on: July 23, 2016, 02:02:40 pm »
'04 Durango began using oil at 150K miles (before then zero oil used). Between 150-155,000 miles used one quart (oil change), between 155-158000 miles used 1 quart (oil change), between 158,200 and 160400 (oil added).

Asked 2 shops opinion on whether this is a leak or oil burning.  My regular shop said there is a small leak from timing cover gasket (wanted $800 to repair). Had to replace water pump so asked the repair shop (not same as first shop) to examine timing cover gasket for leak during water pump replacement.  They observed no leak.

I do see occasionally SMALL oil stains on pavement overnight. no puddling.  I do see wet surface on lower back part of engine (so there is some leakage).

Since the oil use started suddenly and is increasing in short amount of time (been 7 months between I noticed the oil use). Looking for others experience on this subject. I'm not an experienced mechanic.

thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum

Have you tried any of the additives that help stop oil leaks?
