Hurricane Mathew got my truck.
« on: October 12, 2016, 11:17:31 pm »
Hello all,
My 2006 Ram 2500 diesel 4x4 was caught in the tidal surge.
Salt water was over the axles for an extended time.
Anyone have an idea if this would damage the wheel bearings or anything else??
Thanks.

Axles, Transfer Case, Transmission, lower end of the engine, shocks/struts/ball joints, etc...

not to mention the lower panels, possibly into the cab.

Didn't get to the bottom of the body. Just the axles.
Do you know if the seals will keep the salt water out when submerged like that?

The wheel bearings should be sealed like the u joints. I might think about changing the oil in the axles. The seals should keep everything out but it couldnt hurt to check.

Thanks.
So, maybe no immediate worries, but some preventive maintenance.
I'm not where the truck is. My neighbor is giving me feedback.
Had a car partially submerged and most probably totaled and a camper destroyed.

If it didn't get into the cab or anywhere in the engine, probably not.. a really goos wash to neutralize and get out the salt from the under-body and wheels. (maybe even pull the wheels and rinse the breaks, etc ) regrease everything to push out any water and the differential oil changes. (if its a 4x4 maybe the transfer case too) It will probably be fine.
