Hemi Spark Plug Change
« on: November 24, 2008, 03:59:31 am »
I was reading the maintenance schedule in my owners manual and it says to change the spark plugs every 30k miles on a Hemi.  Why so often?  I've always changed plugs and wires every 75k - 100k miles.  I'm going to stick to the recommended schedule so that my lifetime warranty will be honored, but I plan on doing as much as I can myself.  I'm just going to keep good records and reciepts for oil, filters (etc....),  But I'm puzzled about the frequency of spark plug change outs.

I'd be more inclined to just pull them at that interval and inspect them.

I would "assume" they will be just fine.

Put a little anti-seize on them and put them back in.

It's actually not a bad idea to pull them and re-torque them anyways, just to make sure they haven't worked loose.........oh sorry, that's for Fords.

I've heard horror stories of seized plugs that have been in for 75,000+ miles. Yeah, I'd at least pull them out and inspect at 30,000 miles.

There are 2 plugs per cylinder on an 08 hemi???  I know the 4.7 has 2 per cylinder, but I didn't think the hemi did until 2009.

The 5.7 Hemi has had 2 plugs per cylinder for a while.

Quote
5.7L
The ignition system is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on all engines.
The 5.7L engine uses dual output coils, and 2 spark plugs per cylinder.
Each cylinder is equipped with 1 dual-output coil. Meaning one coil mounts directly over one of the dual spark plugs
for 1 high-voltage output.

Installation:
5.7L
1. Using compressed air, blow out any dirt or contaminants from around top of spark plug.
NOTE: Use dielectric grease on each of the spark plug boots before installing the coil.
2. Position ignition coil (1) into valve cover and push onto spark plugs.
