Almost lost my wheel
« on: December 16, 2008, 12:34:08 am »
I was driving home last nite and heard a sound like I was dragging something, I checked it out and there was nothing there. The sound stopped.
I drove 14 miles to work and about 13.5 home. I heard a faint grinding noise. I made a right turn to get off the parkway and the grinding got so
loud  it sounded like I hit something. I pulled in to a hydrant to check it out and found these little metal rods (pics below) .I moved the truck in to a legal spot about 50' away the truck wobbled a few times, got out and the front driverside tire was crooked. The bottom stuck out about 4" furthur than the top. Can someone tell me what broke? Is it easy to fix? I'd say that I'm mechanicaly inclined, I haven't done alot of auto work though. I am going through the chiltons manual right now but dont really know what I'm looking for. I'd like to do it myself but I have no problem letting a mechanic do it if it is too much for me. Hre are the pics I took  after it happened. If I left anything out or you need more info let me know. Thanks in advance Brian

looks like the hub is shot to me.  I believe it is a unit bearing and all has to be replaced as one piece.

That's the hub/bearing assembly that went.

See my post about doing the 2nd gen brakes - tells all about pulling it off.

Send Dave a PM with the last 8 of your VIN and he'll get you part numbers to get from your local dealer, or he can ship you the parts

BTW - it'll need to be towed from where it's at - you can't drive it like that.

Thanks I found it in the manual now. I almost found out the hard way that it can't be driven. I was on the expressway doing 55 mph 10 min before it happened. I have to move it by 8:30  on wed morning. the sucky part is that I have 12 days off for christmas and I was going to do the breaks then. guess that will be happening sooner than later. I'll see if I can put it in the landlords driveway till the weekend If not It may need to go to the mechanic. It looks easy enough reading about it in the book .

Tom thanks, I may need to call. I ordered the part today It should be in tomorrow, thanks for the part #'s dave. I had it towed to my job, the boss said it can stay as long as it needs. It's snowing here right now and will all weekend, I'll be working on it outside so this weekend is no good. I'm gonna try next weekend if the weather is still bad I might make a tent for the truck and do it in there. This is the first snow since I bought the truck and i can't drive it. AHHHHHHHH

Dose anyone know what size socket I need for the hub nut?

If I remember correctly (but I've had 6 beers) it's 1 5/16"

I do know that it gets 175 ft/lbs going back on

1 11/16.

pull that nut off, the 3- or 4 (depending on axles) nuts that attach the hub to the steering knuckle. knock it with a hammer a few times to break it loose.

knock the studs from the rotor, then pull the hub. new studs are recommended. and they have to be pressed back into the rotor.

good luck. i too can help if you get stuck. my service information is at my tips.

Tomorrow I pick up the part. Monday is the next day that there is no rain/snow. I'm gonna go and meet one of the guys that I work with  and hopefully we can knock it out. I'm going to do the breaks as long as it's all taken apart. Is the hub heavy? I have to take it on the train or take a cab. I've read both of the DIY's and plan on bringing the laptop so I can follow them. Chiltons has nothing on you guys. Thanks again everyone

hub and bearing are easily carried (less than 20 pounds, if I remember)

Take a BFH if you don't have a press where the truck is - the wheel studs will be a PITA to get out and back in
