CEL Codes
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:14:38 pm »
2000 and newer Dakotas and Durangos have a built-in system that can display check engine light (CEL) codes without the use of a scanner. 1999 and earlier Dakotas/Durangos must be read with a scanner, check your local dealership or auto parts store for assistance.

To check your engine codes:
Turn the key to ON (not start), OFF, ON, OFF, ON and leave it there. If you look in the odometer window the codes will flash any code(s) with a small delay between each result. Each code should be in a P#### format, and will say PDONE when completed - turn your key to OFF and remove. Use the OBD code list to determine what problem the computer detected.

i've read that to do this with 98+ trucks you have to hold the trip reset as you turn the key,

To reset your engine codes:
Remove the negative terminal of your battery (10mm wrench).
Turn your ignition key to START and hold it there for about 15 seconds.
Turn your ignition key to OFF and remove it.
Connect the negative terminal of your battery.

I think the codes are, but it doesn't matter to me anyway - the 99's have to use a scanner

I have one from Snap-On...

Damn, I just checked what codes are showing up on my kota (shop has yet to fix these problems), came up p0442 and p0455.  A medium and a large leak in the Evap system.  Any ideas on how I can find and fix these myself?

Both probably caused by a loose or bad gas cap

Are you in Perry Hall?  that's close to me -  I've got a scanner and can clear the codes, then let's see if they come back - if they don't, it was a loose cap

If they do, then there's a smoke generator that shops use to find the leaks

PM me, and we can hook up - I'll be out of town Saturday, but in Sunday (until the game - then I'm in front of the TV)

Hey, thanks for taking a look at my truck today.  I'll let ya know if the codes come back.  Hopefully just replacing the gas cap will fix it.  But once again, thank you for the help.

And don't forget about the goose hunt invite.

Well, from that I take it that the CEL did not come back on.  Thats great!

I would have expected it to come back on your trip home if there was a problem with the canister.

That's cool

Thanks again for the invite!  Sounds like fun!

Nope, it's still off.  Now I just have to wait till thursday for my paycheck to clear (I REALLY hate Citibank).  But again, thanks for the help, it was greatly appriciated.
I was just told the goose season ends on Saturday.  If you can make it out sometime this week, let me know.  If you can't, I know we'll have plenty of opportunities next season.

Good news on the CEL - now you can get the smog test done and over with

This week is a no-go for me, and Saturday is the Polar Bear Plunge, so we'll have to hook up next year

Good luck if you go this week!

Here we go again.  I was heading home from work down 95 doing about 70 and my truck jerked.  Like I hit a speed bump or something.  I look down and my check engine light is on.  AGAIN.

P0121 (M) TPS Voltage Does Not Agree With MAP TPS signal does not correlate to MAP sensor signal.
P0121 (M) Accelerator Position Sensor (APPS) Signal Voltage Too Low APPS voltage input below the minimum acceptable voltage.

Can someone translate this for me.
