EZ Down Tailgate assist
« on: March 13, 2009, 01:30:27 am »
I got tired of the tailgate slipping out of my hands and slamming down so I picked up the EZ Down Tailgate assist from Genos Garage.

Its a great little kit that comes with all the parts and tools. (rare nowdays) The only extra thing you need is a heat source for the heat shrink tubing.
All total it took me just under 15 minutes to instal. I'll hit the highlights and point out the one change I made.

First, remove the cable and the cable bolt on the truck.

Replace it with the new bolt and re-attach the cable.

Unscrew the cable from the tailgate but instead of removing the travel limit washer as in the instructions. I flattened out the limit side of the washer so that the cable would not rub against the paint. You will only flatten out the short tab. The long washer tab slips into a slot on the tailgate so it doesnt move around.

Add the damper tube to the bolt and then slip it on the tailgate mounting bolt (you added earlier. Yeah its in their instructions...)

Here is the finished result

thanks guys. It has actually turned out to be very handy. Not having to let the tailgate down by hand has turned out to be really nice. I thought the vid was a nice touch. :-)

Don't worry, no "man steps" are gonna get installed on my truck.  :2guns:

OK why does the tailgate not go down all the way?  Also does it make it any harder to lift, I remember my dads 2002 1500 that tail gate weighed a lot.

Youtube cut off the video somehow so I'll get a new one up. Check back in 30 minutes or so. No, it doesn't make it any harder to lift but it's still heavy as heck.

Thanks.

I haven't really noticed if its harder, itseems normal to me. Just getting past that initial Moment of Inertia takes a grunt...
Besides, I wasn't really worried if it took a moment longer to raise , I just hated dropping the tailgate and waking up half the dogs and people in the neighborhood.

the cheapest way to keep from getting your tailgate jacked is to use a screw type hose clamp

Just put the clamp over the right side hinge and tighten it down - most will be too lazy to grab a screwdriver

Or you can buy a lock for that hinge...

I'm not really sweating it, I was just saying that having that shock on there will also make it more difficult
