Keeping trailer lights on
« on: April 28, 2009, 06:38:26 am »
I've seen that some campers somehow manage to keep their trailers running lights on while parked in their camping spot at night. It looks kinda cool. I'm told that all they do is use a jumper wire in the connector harness.

Do any of you know what 2 slots you put the wire?

I've seen trailers with their lights blinking at shows, and they apparently use a flasher, but I'm just looking for a steady on.

Which lights do you want on Donny?

You can make a plug and jump the wires (I can give you the pins needed) that you just plug into the cable when parked (as long as you're plugged into shore power, and your charger is working)

The trailer running lights. Basically, all of the outside lights that run along the top as well as the tail lights. It looks kinda cool to see a trailer all lit up sitting at a campsite not hooked up to a truck.

Yeah, I understand that the trailer will hafta be plugged in. Wouldn't want to kill my battery.

Looking up the wiring now - there's a bunch of conflicting info on the internet about pin numbers and color codes, and hopefully I can get to the bottom if it and get you a diagram.

The RV site I visit had something a while back, but now I can't find it!  :argh:

LOL ... That's why I asked here. I didn't want to jump the wrong two wires and blow something up.

I know I've seen trailers at shows and they stick flashers in the connector to make the lights blink, but I don't know the part number of the flasher so I don't know what pins they use.

I've attached a diagram of the standard wiring for these plugs (standard is used very loosely)

You'll need to get one of these (you can get it anywhere)

And a 12 gauge fuse holder (from Auto Zone or simlar) and run it from Pin 4 to Pin 3 (check your trailer plug - pin 4 should be hot with your battery hooked up)

If you want to get fancy and flash the lights, let me know and I'll draw you a diagram

This doesn't explain a lot, but here it is for what it's worth.

Looking at that pic Kilch, it looks like all I need to do is put a small jumper wire in the top two slots. I kinda figured so since that's probably where the pins on a flasher would go

It also looks like if I put a wire in the wrong slots it won't screw anything up - that's good to see

Thanks !!

Yep - just use a fuse! - you don't want anything to dead short those plugs - then you'd have to call Anthony.     Here's his number:  911

What size fuse do you think I'd need?

Cool ideas. I just stick a jumper wire in the pins of the plug, which isn't the best way of doing it. I really like the toggle switch idea that walt posted up. I would probably add a fuse but I think that's my next project right there.

Do a DIY if you're going to do it Ken. I'd love to see how to work a switch into the mix !!
