Well, I pulled the trigger today........ah.. on the phone with R & R Arms. I ordered the DPMS LR338L , which is basically a AR Platform chambered in Federal .338.

Can't wait till it arrives, gonna have to start thinking about a scope now. Leaning towards a Zeiss Conquest.

Deer season will have a new twist this year!

Do you want a collapsible butt stock for it?

I have an extra one here at the house. It's a 4 position with the carbine buffer.

The only thing you might need is a heavier buffer and spring.

Maybe so, but I'll probably just keep it stock. I'll keep that in mind when I receive it. I guess I need to see how it fits me when I shoulder it up.

I'm so used to using my Weatherby, with the high monte carlo stock. I with that I could adapt something like that to the DPMS. I'm going to use a large objective lens scope, at least a 50MM, so the scope will sit a little high, and I would like some of the stock in contact with my cheek. I remember seeing in some magazines, strap on cheek pads that might work.
That's what I like about the Weatherby stocks. They have a large portion of stock in contact with your cheek for a firm connection.
I'm by no means trained in advance rifle shooting or tactical use, but just been hunting with this rifle for over 10 years, and I'm accustomed to the way that it connects to me.

Just lettin' ya know.

I have an extra sitting in the closet.

When I ordered my lower, it had the 4 position stock and I wanted the 6 position. They're cheap, so I just picked one up.

I got a cheek rest for the collapsible stock. Adds an extra inch on top of it. Just snaps into place. You'll have to let me know how the platform preforms when its chambered in 338. I've been thinking of getting a 308 version but have heard that it doesnt preform that well with the heavier round

edit: nevermind the cheek rest just snapped it in place and it is way too tall for a scope mounted on the rail. Its built for a scope mounted on the carry handle.

My next build is gonna be a gas piston version, like the SIG and HK's.

I'm really diggin' that setup.

Had 2 guys with the gas piston setups in Asscrackistan and they loved 'em. Maintenance was so much easier.

Ok, I'll play:

First, my favorite:  Marlin Slugmaster 12gauge.  Incredible accurate for a 12 gauge slug gun.  And, yes, that IS a bolt action ;)

Traditions by Fausti Field Hunter 12 gauge over/under

Then, the hand me down coming through the family, Harrington and Richardson, Deluxe Topper M488, .410

One of my latest that I'm still mastering, Connecticut Valley Arms, .50 caliber black powder

And if all else fails, I'll throw some sharp sticks at whatever I'm hunting.... Browning Inferno compound bow, currently set at 70 lb draw.

Yeah, I've read a review on a Sako 85 chambered in the .338 Federal, and it didn't rank very well according to Sako's factory guarantee of accuracy. I'm going out on a limb here to buy this rifle, just hoping that I can get at least a three inch group at a 100 yards. In some of the areas  that I hunt, I'm sometimes further away from the deer in height than I am in horizontal distance.
No, not really that extreme but yes, many of my shooting lanes are not very long, 50 yards tops. So with that in mind, I'm looking for a close quarter, short rifle.
I'll find out soon enough, and let ya know.

I know picture looks like crap.  My bow is a Diamond Rapture fast, quiet , and light.
The rifle is a Ruger 10-22  stainless target model my wife and I won at the Rocky mountain elks foundation banquet this year.
