$15 and 10 minutes
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:42:49 pm »
I had bought two packs of poly sway bar bushings to make indestructible mounts for my samurai.  I had four of them left over.  So I left them sitting on the desk, not thinking much about them.  Today I was a little bored, so I thought I'd put them on my truck if they'd work.  Sure enough, they work great!  A pack of them would include enough to do two trucks.  They only cost about $15 with tax at any of the big name parts stores.  And best of all it's only 10 mins start to finish to put them on.  So if you've got a buddy with a 4wd dodge, hook him up too!

You can see my factory bushings with 230K miles are a little worse for wear huh?

First off, do yourself a favor.  Pour a little bit of oil on the threads.

Next take the nuts off both sides.  It's a 15mm.  Then pull the sway bar up and out of the way.  You can then pull the crusty bushings out.  Keep the bottom washer as it's a little larger than the ones included in the pack.

The bottom bushing has a little larger shaft to go over.  So I just took my deep well socket and tapped it on with a hammer.  It'll go on easy.

Once you have the base bushings on.  Lower the sway bar back down on the rods at the same time.  Then simply pop the top bushings and washers on.  I used the nice galvanized washers supplied.

Then snug them back down on both sides and you're done!

Yeah, I think I've got my monies worth out of these!

I could have probably replaced the entire link.  But I had these laying around.  The ball joint sections still felt tight on mine though, surprisingly!

Not sure if they're for any certain truck.  Just go to autozone or whatever chain parts store you have.  Go past the bling/ricer isle.  Then over to the towing section.  Should be right there.  $12.99 + tax a pack here.

Will the oil react with the bushings and eat them from the inside out or am I just paranoid?
DoF, it's like family, but with more straight jacket and less restraining order.

You're a paranoid schizophrenic.

Poly bushings are tough.

BTW, test drove today.  I can tell a noticeable improvement in the truck's handling.  I think I might have partially solved the buckboarding while stopping too!

What about the one at the bottom of the link where it connects to the front axle housing?

You'd have to buy new links for those.  Those are ball joint style.

When the bushing on my 2nd Gen wore out I just took the sway bar off, only a little more body roll but it is a lot more flexy on the trail
