hx35 hybrid turbo
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:28:38 pm »
I currently have a 01 Cummins 4x4 with a stock turbo. I am looking to upgrade my turbo but not loose my turbo mounted exhaust brake. The only way I have found is to go with a hybrid. I currently have; an Edge Juice w/Attitude, 40hp Edge jammers, Byrd's Diesel intake, B&D heavy duty auto trans with lockup, MBRP turbo back 4", Airaid cold air intake and Pac exhaust brake. I will have a Air dog II next week. I am trying to find out what size I should go with, a 60/12 or 60/14 both wastegated. I am also looking to go with bigger injectors. I am looking at the DDP 110hp would these be adequate and a good combo with my current mods.

do you know what size turbine wheels they have in them?

The smaller housing will spool faster typically

The DDP 110's are good (but don't do it until your lift pump situation is fixed) - you're already pushing way beyond the capabilities of your stock system with your current mods

My Airdog II will be in next week prior to buying the turbo and injectors. I am looking at the High Tech turbo hx35/40 they do give a wheel size on the web site. With the addition of the Airdog II would that be a good combo or should I go in another direction.

From some reading I've done, that turbo is very succeptable to damage from barking (letting out of the throttle rapidly while at high boost)

Also, it's efficiency range is right around the same pressures as your stock turbo - you really won't gain much with it

I'd research other options that will allow you to retain the EB

I just had a chat w/ a nice gentlemen from Industrial Injection the other day regarding their Silver line.  My Jake Brake's inlet pairs up with the size of the stock turbo's outlet. He saw no issues with me installing a Silver infront of my Jake.

(warned me that any EB is going to shorten the life of a turbo but as he explained it the difference is weeks not years or anythings)

It depends on the inlet size of your Pac Brake which options will work for you.

I have been researching this for a while this is my only option to retain my EB and get better EGTs and power while pulling a trailer. If I had known what I known know I would have bought an inline EB instead of the turbo mounted one. I understand that this will not be a big jump in efficiency but it is something that I can afford to do to help.

Also lilfroger from what I understand your truck came stock with a HX40 which has a 4" exhaust my hy35 has a 3 1/2" exhaust and most of the upgraded turbos have the 4" so I am stuck with a hybrid or buying a new turbo and a new EB.

Not a problem lilfroger, it took me a minute to figure it out myself.

Does anyone know which would be better for towing, the 60/12w or the 60/14w? I know the 12 spins up faster and the 14 produces more power but is slower to spin up.

For towing, lag isn't really an issue - just on the launch

I don't think you'll notice much difference between the two on a pull - again, the smaller housing will spool quicker around town
