Installing a Fire and Ice light bar under the tailgate.
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:15:51 am »
I got this for Christmas and have been too lazy to install it until today. Step one is remove the tailgate and lay it inside down on some wood.

Next measure and find the center of the mounting area and the light bar. Mark them with something for reference later.
Next find something to space the bar up from the bumper. This location is very critical because if you go too high the tail gate will hit the light bar, too low and you cover up your spare tire winch access. I used wood trim I had laying around it was 0.4" thick. This put it at the perfect height. BTW thanks Rob for coaching me on this.

Next I cleaned the mounting areas on the truck first with window cleaner, then with a alcohol wipe that came with the light. After letting it dry I peeled the the backing off the two faced tape that was on the light bar and using my wood shims and the center marks I made earlier I positioned and stuck the bar to the truck. I left the shims under it while I wired it up to make sure the tape had some time to set up.

Most of the light functions were plug and play. The light bar had a 4 pin flat plug that plugs into the 4 pin plug on the truck. For the backup lights it had to hard wired into the truck. I found the wire color for the reverse light in the service manual. On my truck it is white with light green tracer. Be careful here because there are three other white wires in the harness including one that is white white dark green tracer. I tapped the wire on the harness right below the drivers side tale light using the scotchlock that came with the light bar.

Then I wire tied everything up nice and neat, and wrapped any possible chaffing points with some electrical tape. I didn't have any wire loom so the tape will do for now.

All that is left to do is put the tailgate on and admire your work

Here are some day shots and a night shot of the handy work.

Sorry for the crappy pics, my kids ran the battery down in the real cam, so i had to go to the phone for this.

That looks good man

I saw a new 1500 yesterday that had a LED bar under his tailgate, but when he hit his turn signal, that half of the bar was sequential and the turn signal in his tail lights blinked twice when the bar reached them.  I'd like to know how he rigged that up.
