Cummins Fuel Filter Housing Eliminator
« on: August 29, 2010, 05:15:36 pm »
The filter housing eliminator can be found from a number of vendors  ;)

A few of us have installed an AirDog or Fass Fuel pump/filter system and are now left with a fairly useless bypassed stock filter housing that we want to remove. If you don't want to re-plumb the whole return line system,  the Cummins Fuel Filter Housing Eliminator kit fits in place of the stock filter unit. Basically this is a mountable tube that joins the Injector pump/HPOV return line with the Injector return/Fuel return line.

Tools you'll need to do the replacement
10mm wrench (Filter housing nuts and bolts)
T-5 hex (housing bolt)
17 mm wrench (Filter housing banjo bolt)
19 mm wrench (HPOV -high pressure overflow valve banjo bolt)

Filter Housing Eliminator

(Note: It is easier to remove the housing if the intake horn is moved out of the way)

Unhook the Water-in-Fuel connector.
Drain the filter housing and unbolt the return lines from the cab side of the filter housing. Be sure to hold the lines while undoing the banjo bolts as it can put some stress on the lines(17mm)

Unbolt the wiring harness from the housing mount. (10mm)

(It is easier to remove the front return lines from the housing after it is removed from the truck.)
Unbolt the return from the HPOV and Injector pump. (19mm, 17mm)
Unbolt the filter housing from the head and remove the whole unit from the engine compartment. (10mm)

Removed Filter housing

Mount the Eliminator and attach the cab side return line (torgue the banjo bolt to 18ft lbs) I couldn't find torque specs for the Eliminators bolts so I torqued them to 18ft/lbs (like many of the other cyl head external bolts)
Reattach the front side Banjo bolt the HPOV and the Injector pump bolts, once they are all in place torque  to 18ft/lbs)
This is the installed unit.

Tie Wrap the remaining return line and check for leaks.
Cover and tie wrap the remaining electrical plugs left after the removal.
Enjoy.

Isn't the fuel heater located on the Fuel / Water separator housing? Is there an alternative to keep the heater?

I was thinking the same, in a warmer climate I'm sure its fine. I'd be a little afraid of doing away with the fuel heaters for the Maryland winters.

When you put in a Fass or an AirDog 99.99% of people are bypassing the stock filter housing and have everything disconnected. Its not going to heat up fuel if there is no fuel running through it...
I think the FASS lets you plumb in engine coolant but the fuel returning to the tank from the engine should also warm it up. Of course it presumes you can start the engine in the first place..
If your fuel gells up the stock heater/housing wont help much either.

We left our lines specifically going through the stock housing because of the fuel heater.

It's nice having all that room in there now, ain't it.

Like Rob said, the fuel heater is pretty useless.

It's more likely to gel up in the OEM, steel, uninsulated fuel supply lines than anyplace else which makes the heater in the filter housing kind of pointless.

There are a few inline heaters available, but realistically, if the entire fuel line isn't heater, you're kinda SOL if any other part gel's.

That's a nice concept to remove the canister. Here in my neck of the woods, a heater is of no concern.

Rich........you have access to these?

I figured living down South the risk of gelling is much reduced. Even when i travel up to the cold places (Indiana) in winter I'll get fuel from the area and keep some anti-gel handy for when I know its going to be getting really cold.

And yes, there is lots of room in there now.

Heck, with that and the batteries gone you have plenty of room in there.
