Title: Steer Axle Pinion Seal AAM 9 1/4
Post by: jakebrake on July 08, 2009, 02:18:46 am
Ok start by removing the four bolts holding the drive shaft to the yoke flange. You'll need a t40 torx socket for this

Mark the drive shaft and flange so you can install the drive shaft back in the same position.

Tie the drive line out of the way. Using a 1 1/4" socket, remove the yoke nut and washer

You may need a puller to get the yoke off the splines of the pinion. (Camera somehow magically got set on black and white  )

Pull the old seal out with a seal puller or a slide hammer

Clean up all sealing surfaces with scotchbrite or emery cloth. Install new seal into axle housing with a seal installer. I like to use loctite 640 sleeve retainer on the outside of the seal to help with install and sealing.

Back to black and white for dramatic affect  :nail:

Install yoke onto splines, use a little rtv silicone on the backside of the washer to seal the splines. Torque pinion nut to 200ft lbs. This will get you close to the correct bearing preload.

Install front drive shaft lining up your marks. Torque bolts to 21ft lbs with loctite 242 red

Nice write up Jake. Did you have a helluva time removing the yoke after you took the nut off? The tech that did mine had to fight the thing all the way off. It seems they put some type of loctite (white) type stuff on the splines at the factory and that bugger didn't want to move. After torquing to 200 ft/lbs was it difficult to rotate the pinion?

The yoke came off pretty easy with the puller. The white stuff on the splines is a sealer so oil wont seep out the splines. The way I came up with 200ft lbs is I used a torque gauge while removing the pinion nut so I could see how tight it was (about 198ft lbs is what it took to get the nut to break loose). Measured the force it took to spin the front end with a torque gauge both before and after and there was no measureable difference.

The guy that did mine wrenched down pretty good with his impact gun on mine and it is very stiff to turn ever since. Should I back off the yoke nut a little? It doesn't seem to get too hot or anything, but I always wondered.

can you feel any backlash by turning the drive shaft with the front wheels on the ground? If it turns easy through the backlash then you're safe to run.

Nice write-up Jake!

I guess you saw fluid leaking onto the driveshaft...?

How do you get leverage to put 200 ft/lbs of torque onto it?

I had to use a big ass pipe extension when I did the axle nut, must be difficult when you're laying under the truck.

Actually with a 24" long torque wrench, you only need to pull 100 pounds of force on the handle

its only 200 ft/lbs. I'll let ya torque some C-15 main bolts sometime
