'06 injector replacement
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:05:49 pm »
Replacing a single injector was a surprisingly simple job.  I've been meaning to write this up for a while, so I'm doing this from memory and from my notes on the torque specs.  If anything seems to be missing please say so.

First, disconnect the 2 injector wiring connectors and remove the 6 bolts from the valve cover gasket

Carefully, remove the wiring from each injector and remove the gasket/wiring harness

Remove the appropriate fuel line

You will have to remove a single rocker to gain access to one of the injector bolts.

Now, this is where I ran into my trouble, You have to pull the connector tube out to remove the injector.  Get a good solid grip where the fuel line was removed earlier and pull.  Mine was stubborn and was a real :censored: to get out.  I had called Rich at this point to see if there was a trick and his advice was basically "pull harder"

Anyway, once that's out, remove the injector and replace with the new one.

For reinstalling, mount the injector and tighten the mounting bolts to 44 in-lb to seat the injector.  Then loosen the bolts.
Reinstall the connector tube, tighten to 11 ft-lb.
Retighten the injector mounting bolts to 89 in-lb

Reinstall the valve cover gasket and injector wiring.  The injector wiring nuts tighten to 11 in-lb.

Reinstall the exhaust rocker to and set the valve lash.

Reinstall the fuel line, tighten to 37 ft-lb (yes, this is a PITA to get a good angle on to torque it).

Once everything is tightened back down, replace the valve cover and reconnect the injector harness connectors.

If ya weren't such a sissy, I wouldn't have had to tell you that.

:tt2:

Actually, the end of the connector tube is threaded, but don't worry too much about messing these threads up. The ONLY thing they are there for is to screw in the removal tool for the tubes.

Just use a pair of needle nose pliers on them and give a yank.

And if ya do mangle it too much......not a real big deal, the tubes are like $16.

Actually, I couldn't keep a good grip with needle nose pliers.  I ended up threading a nut back on the end of it and gripping the nut with a large set of channel locks to yank it out.

And the #4 is enough of a PITA to reach... I do not want to have to do the #6

Yeah, #6 is always joy.

There is actually a specific tool to remove the tubes.

It's nothing more than a t-handle that threads onto the tube.

A flat blade screwdriver under that shoulder works well too!

I have the tool for 2nd gens (probably the same as the 3rd) that can be loaned if someone needs to borrow it...

One thing you might add is to make sure the copper washer comes out with the old injector, and is replaced with the new one.
