« on: November 28, 2012, 03:07:48 pm »
OK Gang....After a suggestion from my constant source of info..(lilfroger) I'm popin up this thread....The Hillbilly Trans flush.....The little Blakdak has 130+ on it and I'm bettin the trans has never been serviced...My question to the "learned" been there done that crowd IS...Amsoil vs ATF+4...Whats the real skinny on this AMSOIL...SOOOO....BAT...SHO...Step right up and let her rip if your so inclined......Gona make a trip to N.C. in a couple weeks and figured it's as good a time as any to get oily..... :Mechanic:

Not sure about the Daks but for ours Amsoil doesn't work as well just stay with AFT+4 it is a Synthetic

ATF 4 and I would not go with amsoil. Personally I do not like trans flush on these trucks. There is an in line filter that you can clogg.  I would just drop the pan and replace filter.
2000 Dakota CC slt plus, v6 :( auto.

i'ma gonna agree with spence...

kinda...

you can use the trans itself as a pump for the fluid.

but before we get into that... pull your trans dipstick and smell the fluid. how does it look and how does it smell?

Exactly my intension SHO...Let the trans evac..Get it to op temp..Pop a return line outa the cooler..evac to a bucket...shut it down..pull pan & filter..Good cleanin..Throw a magnet in if i dont have 1..and button it back up..Refill the pan...fire it up and evac again...Im kinda leary bouta 1 size fits all, so I gota agree with BUFORD  & SPENC...Thats why I ask the BOYS IN THE KNOW   ....They should op identical hydraulicly...The clutch material is the issue in my squirrely litl mind....   Whats the fill capacity doin it like this.I'm seein 10-14  quarts doin it like this...Im all ears...."Opinions are the GOLD you don't have to dig to deep for"

Ahh shucks I failed... I don't have the '03 service manual :(  '01 is closest I have (http://www.scribd.com/doc/42409679/2001-Dakota-Service-Manual)

That shows the following for the 42RE capacities:

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Service Fill - 42RE 3.8L (4.0 qts)
O-haul Fill - 42RE 9.1-9.5L (19-20 pts)

Install, Owners, & Service Manuals for many years & makes:

You undo the return line on the trans, but before you do anything, pull the dipstick and smell the fluid. If it's a dark red/black and burnt smelling... it's too far gone and the clutches have been burning up.

Thanks lilfroger...I saw that  after I ask the question as usual.I figured 10min-14 qts due to waste from flushing.....HAHA....And  SHO....The fluid is suprisingly good.....My ol man had service stations since I wasa Kid..My brother & i used to have tire & automotive shop years ago......Pulin the dip was my first move....My pockets been smokin every since I got this little truck.....I might not be goin the performance mod route...(just  YET  SHO)...I'm just wantin to service the power & drivetrain first....Then I'm doin the ignition..(Brass cap rotor wires plugs)...Fab up a cold air intake...Ball joints aren't optional on this one...THERE Toast.... Paint the hood, roof & tailgate.....Get it nice and shiny lookin...AND just maybe....Swap her out for one of the 4x4's i've been lusting over.....Bat seems to like um a little LOWER  than i do....Think im goin up..(just the redneck in me i guess)..LMAO..!!! But we'll see ??...Guess I was wantin to see what everyone thought of the AMSOIL vs ATF-4...Didn't know +4 was synthetic till Buford said somethin....SOOO...I'm goin +4 & a filtran...Probably CASTROL

glad to hear the fluid is still good.

should be a straight and easy task since it is so good.

i'm debating on servicing mine... it's like right at the edge. fluid mainly red, but darker on the dipstick

the 4x4's are nice.... but i went with AWD  :cho:
