!999 Dodge Van 5.9 engine started running bad yesterday. Check engine light blinks on and off when climbing up hill or accelerating. engine idles good but hesitates above 1000 rpm, no codes.

Joe,

First, welcome to DOF!

:welcome:

Second, when the light is blinking, it's time to stop......quickly. Steady light is usually a minor problem. Blinking light is usually something that is going to cause damage pretty quickly.

I'm assuming a gas engine here.....

But from the sounds of it, you're getting detonation and the knock sensor is tripping that light. I say this be cause you said it's idling fine, but under load it's hesitating.

More than likely the ECM is trying to retard the timing to keep the knock in check and it's no longer within spec or it's not able to retard it enough to prevent the knock, tripping that light.

Could just be a be a bad batch of gas, but more than likely it needs a tune-up.

Has the van had a tune-up any time recently?

I put a new air filter in, new spark plugs, had it filled up with different high test gas, didn't help. I did a compression check, 150 all around. It's a 5.9 gas engine, has no power, has spark knock above 55 and if I don't slow down the check engine light starts flashing on and off. Could it be the ignition module?

I am thinking the camshaft position sensor....
CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
The camshaft position sensor is located in the distributor on all engines.

The sensor contains a hall effect device called a sync signal generator to generate a fuel sync signal. This sync signal generator detects a rotating pulse ring (shutter) on the distributor shaft. The pulse ring rotates 180 degrees through the sync signal generator. Its signal is used in conjunction with the crankshaft position sensor to differentiate between fuel injection and spark events. It is also used to synchronize the fuel injectors with their respective cylinders.

When the leading edge of the pulse ring (shutter) enters the sync signal generator, the following occurs: The interruption of magnetic field causes the voltage to switch high resulting in a sync signal of approximately 5 volts.

When the trailing edge of the pulse ring (shutter) leaves the sync signal generator, the following occurs: The change of the magnetic field causes the sync signal voltage to switch low to 0 volts

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
The camshaft position sensor is located in the distributor.

REMOVAL
Distributor removal is not necessary to remove camshaft position sensor

1.Remove engine cover. Refer to Body.
2.Disconnect negative cable from battery.
3.Remove distributor cap from distributor (two screws)
4.Disconnect camshaft position sensor wiring harness from main engine wiring harness.
5.Remove distributor rotor from distributor shaft.
6.Lift the camshaft position sensor assembly from the distributor housing Camshaft Position Sensor
INSTALLATION
1.Install camshaft position sensor to distributor. Align sensor into notch on distributor housing.
2.Connect wiring harness.
3.Install rotor.
4.Install distributor cap. Tighten mounting screws.
5.Install engine cover.

Have you tried plug wires?

Most of my bet is on what's mentioned above, sensor, wires, cap all that.  With a 5.9 gas engine you might wanna take a look into the bottom of your intake (pop off hte air hat and open the butterflys, should have a clear view to the bottom), if you see some wet oil down there you have a sucked in belly pan gasket.  If those things start leaking enough you'll get a ton of spark knock, and it can start burning oil and run you low on oil.  I haven't heard of one setting of the Check engine warning, but if it's bad enough and your MAP sensor was way off the map with the TPS and O2 I could see it happening.

After using 2 tanks of Valero high test gas, it runs great again. The  gas that caused the problem, was a regular gas with a mixture of ethanol .
