Have you ever been in your truck and smelled a horrible oil smell? Well I have and it's quite annoying, gotten many headaches from it. I have been told that it is coming from the oil vent tube that is above the front axle.
Anyway, here is a DIY on extending that tube past the cab so you don't smell it anymore.
Supplies:
10' of 3/4" I.D. (Inside Diameter) Tubing
1/2" - 1 1/4" Hose Clamp
Screwdriver (1 of Each)
WD40
Zip-Ties

Here is the end of the tube, right above the axle...

First you want to clean all the excess oil from the outside of the vent tube. The tube is 3/4" O.D., slip the hose clamp on your extension tube and spray a little WD40 on the inside of it. Slide the extension tube over the existing vent approx. 3/4 of an inch and tighten the clamp...

Now you need to secure the tube out of the way of everything. There is a tab with a hole in it on the transmission. We will run a zip-tie through it and around the hose. Here is the tab...

Now run a zip-tie through the hole and around the tube. I found this to be the best place to secure it. It keeps it out of the way of the front driveshaft (if you have one)...

Now unroll the rest of the tube and keep securing it with zip-ties all the way back. I used brake lines to secure it too...

Right before you get to the fuel tank, go over the frame and put the tube on the outside of the frame rail...

I secured the end right before the front bed mount to the parking brake cable. If you choose to secure it to the cable, make sure you are attaching it to a spot that has a sheath over the cable, or else when you press the parking brake the cable with cut the zip-tie and the vent will just be hanging there...

Now you no longer have to smell that horrible smell.
Thanks to everyone else who pointed out where the smell was coming from, I know I'm not the first one to do this but hopefully with some pics it will help someone else down the line.

The only thing that I'm a LITTLE worried about is where you run it up and over your frame. You MAY wind up puddling some oil in the line there and cutting off the airflow

You should see my hands right now... I'm tore up from working on one of the buses that had wire ties like that all over the place - looks like I punched a plate glass window!

Yeah, that's why I ran the pvc and kept it inside of the frame rail. No chance of puddling that way, and it's on a slight slope back. :up:
Has the smell gone away now?

It has, but like I said there was really no rhyme or reason as to when I would smell it. It wasn't only after an oil change, it was always, but not everyday. :scratch:

Mine looks for reasons TO need to drive my truck.
She's figured out that passing people is a whole lot more fun when you have enough power to do it.
Don't get me wrong, she loves the truck. But, also her new car. Plus, we have 3 kids in the back and whenever we go to the store or have stuff with us it usually ends up getting piled on the floor at her feet or she has to hold it. :devil:

I was pretty pi$$ed last night and this morning. I was driving and started to smell that familiar smell. Wasn't near as strong, but definitely there. I've noticed that I smell it, when the truck is at operating temp, the heat is on and the interior temp finally warms up to the point where you need to turn the heat down and maybe crack a window. Starting to wonder if it's maybe something with the heat.
When I was doing this mod I noticed a light wisp of very light whitish smoke coming from the area where the vent tube comes out from under the head. Any ideas on that??

I DEFINITELY will, do you think maybe there is some oil laying around it that's burning and the smell is making its way through the cab vents and into my nostrils...
Do those filters need changed on these trucks?

I was gonna say something about the oil laying around thing. Depending on where the oil was dripping before, you may just have a little more to still burn off. If you're up for it, prehaps spray some Simple Green under there and hose it down.

If it did drip it was onto the ground, there were no oil marks on the frame or other parts of the truck.

Did you ever straighten out the line where it went over the frame?

Not yet, that may trap oil like you brought up but I don't think it would trap vapors.

Maybe, but if the oil puddles up enough, it's going to close the line up completely, and now the vapors that used to come out of the line have to come out somewhere else
See what I mean?
I'm not at all saying that this is your problem, but it's worth looking into. It looks fairly easy to do, and won't cost you a thing.
While you're under there, you can trim those hangnails

The reason I mention the possibility of puddling is because my vent DOES leave oil spots below it on my driveway, which leads me to believe that a little bit of oil must be working it's way through there somehow.

Ya know, since you're not getting the results that you're looking for from the smoke switch. You could route that PVC into your exhaust pipe, then...
